Simple Bracing Connection

This document summarizes the design of a brace-to-beam connection. It provides the material properties of a 5x5x5/8" brace and connecting gusset plate. It calculates the expected tensile and compressive strengths of the brace. A 10-bolt connection using 1" diameter bolts is designed. Checks are performed on the bolt shear strength, bearing strength on the brace and gusset, and block shear strength of the brace and gusset. The gusset plate thickness of 3/4" is determined to be adequate.
