As you change these values, the connection status will be checked. The
connection status window will indicate if the connection is made or not.
NOTE : The Append function is a nonreversible function. The data file can not be
changed (no undo function) back to its original format. The only option is to close
the file without saving and reopen. It is suggested that you save the file before
performing this function for ease of data recovery in case you perform a function
in error.
The new column (J) has been added to the end of the grid file.
Other types of Files have different DATA FILE LABELS.
Auto Labeler
The Auto Labeler assists in the labeling process for file types which use location
and/or point names identified with text.
This function will fill in repetitive text and increment a numeric component within
the label.
Starting Index: The starting field number* to which this Auto Label
operation will apply.
Ending Index: The ending field number* to which this Auto Label operation
will apply.
*The field number is the number appearing in the Edit Custom Label box.
Common Text (prefix): The text which will be repeated at the beginning of
each label (this field may be left blank if desired).
Starting Numeric: The number which will be added to the
Common Text to form the first label.
Increment Numeric by: The value added to each label numeric to get the next
label (this can be a positive or negative number).
Common Text (suffix): The text which will be repeated at the end of each
label (this field may be left blank if desired).
Autolabeler Example
Filling in the Auto Labeler with these settings.
Will fill in the labels like this.
B-Scan Analysis
The B-Scan stored within the DMS 2 and then downloaded to UltraMATE, can be
analyzed for thickness values at any points within the B-Scan window. Using the
mouse move the mouse pointer into the B-Scan window. The normal curser
changes to a cross-hair and a vertical red line appears in the B-Scan window.
The user can move the mouse pointer back and forth through the B-Scan image.
A red line indicated the position of the pointer and the thickness value at that
specific point is displayed above the B-Scan image.
Boiler File
The Boiler file is a special adaptation of the Grid file with features especially
designed to accommodate Boiler work.
1. The rows are named with alphanumeric text instead of letters or numbers.
2. At each Elevation/Tube location, there may up to three readings (DMS) or
four readings (DMS 2).
3. Readings are labeled either L,C,R,B (left, center, right, back) or 1,2,3,4.
NOTE!
Alphanumeric labels are not supported by all instrument models.
When uploading a file which uses alphanumeric labels to an instrument
which does not support this type of identifier, UltraMATE will make the
necessary conversions.
Break Points
Color Range Break Point lists may be created without opening a data file by
selecting File from the menu bar and choosing NEW - Break Point List.
The Color Range Break Points window is accessed from the EDIT menu when
a data file is open.
These settings determine the display color for the given ranges when
Colorization is set to Break Points.
Ranges must be contiguous. The beginning thickness will be ZERO or the most
negative value contained in the file.
Use the mouse to access each range or use TAB and Shift-TAB.
Single click on the color field to select the color for any range.
If a check mark does not appear in the Enable column, that range of thickness
will be displayed in black while viewing data.
Save As allows the complete color/range setting to be saved for later use with
other files.
Open allows the user to retrieve saved BREAK POINT settings.
Turn on Break Point colorization by selecting VIEW from the menu bar and
selecting Colorize Readings or the highliter button on the tool bar.
Once you have set the Color Break Points (numeric ranges and
colors) for a specific data file, the information is stored in the thickness
data file. If you save the file by selecting FILE from the menu bar and
choosing Save or Save As, the Color Break Point data will be present
the next time the file is viewed.
Color Break Point data is NOT, however, sent to the thickness gauge
and is therefore NOT available in any newly downloaded thickness
data file.
For example, you may want to color the locations which have comments
attached to the thickness readings.
Colorization
The ability to color code thickness values according to the ranges allows the
user to locate thin spots quickly. By checking the Break Points box in the
Reading Attributes window, the window will change and show the different
colors by thickness range as defined by the Break Point setting.
See Break Points to see how to set the thickness values and colors.
Comparing Files
Compare calculates the difference or % change of the thickness values in two
files and displays the calculated values as a positive or negative value in a new
window.
The files must be of the same size, and type (Structure) although each file does
not have to have readings in all locations.
Access the Compare function by selecting File from the menu bar.
1. Select the newest file first by double clicking on its name in the list box.
2. Repeat to select the older file
3. Click NEXT

Select Calculate Absolute Loss / Growth to show the difference between the
two values as a positive or negative value.
Select Calculate Percent Loss / Growth to show the percentage change as a
positive or negative value.
Connecting your Computer and Data Logger
To connect your thickness gauge to your computer, you must use the cable
appropriate for the gauge.
Connect the other end of the cable to an available COM port on your computer.
Set the baud rate you wish to use in the RS-232 menu of the instrument (if the
instrument supports this option).
Click CONNECT in the FILE TRANSFER menu which will appear when you
select DATA TRANSFER - SEND or RECEIVE.
The AUTOCONNECT feature of UltraMATE will find the COM port to which the
instrument is connected.
If the AUTOCONNECT function fails:
1. Make sure the instrument is ON and that the battery is above 50% full
capacity.
2. Check the connection to the COM port of the computer.
3. The COM port must be recognized by the Windows operating system.
Check system profile to verify Windows can use the comm port
connected. Refer to Windows HELP on verifying and setting COM ports.
Infared Communication
Instruments and PC's supporting Infared communication can connect and
transfer data without the use of an RS-232 cable. The user MUST confirm
that the Infared Communication device on the PC is operating properly.
For additional information on use of the Infared Communication
capabilities, please review information located on the Krautkramer Web
Site http://www.krautkramer.com
ADVANCED options
Copy & Paste to Access
To get UltraMATE thickness data into Microsoft Access, you must first create
the database table in Access.
Use these guidelines to create the table structure:
1. You must have at least as many fields as you have points at each
location PLUS a field for the location name itself if coping names.
2. The data type (numeric, text, etc) must be compatible with the data to be
copied, i.e. if you select TEXT as the data type for the locations, the first
record will contain the names of the columns (point names) and each
subsequent record will contain the location name in the first field with the
thickness values in the remaining fields. Thickness locations marked
OBSTR or EMPTY will show this text in the appropriate records and fields.
3. If you must have your thickness value fields defined as NUMERIC to allow
the data analysis you wish to perform, make only the first field TEXT to
accommodate the location name. The problem with this technique is that
any location (record) which contains even one EMPTY or OBSTR will be
excluded entirely from the PASTE operation, i.e. the location and all of its
points will be skipped. They will be placed in a table called "Paste Errors",
created automatically by Access .
2. Select Edit from the menu bar and choose Copy or just press Ctrl-C.
All of the selected data is now in the Windows clipboard.
3. Select or start your spreadsheet application.
4. Choose the cell which will be the upper left corner of the data.
5. Select Edit from the menu bar and choose Paste or just press Ctrl-V.
Copy & Paste within UltraMATE
UltraMATE allows the user to copy and paste individual reading cells, or
blocks of cells in other areas of the data file.
IMPORTANT : Copy and Paste can not be undone. Be sure to save information
often in case you make a mistake in the copy and paste process. If you make
a mistake, close the data file without saving then reopen the old (last saved)
data file.
Step 1 : Window 1 shows readings at the bottom of the spreadsheet.
Step 2 : To copy readings, block the desired readings and click on the copy
button.
Step 3 : Click on the top left cell for the data to be pasted into. Click on the paste
button. The following message will be displayed. Click on the YES box to paste
the data into the new area.
Result : The data is now pasted into the new area.
Create Comment Lists
Comment lists are "imprinted" into each data file when it is created.
A library of comment lists may be kept on the PC to provide a selection which is
appropriate for the data file being created.
To create a Comment List:
1. Choose FILE from the menu bar and select NEW - Comment List.
2. Click on the top field and enter the first comment.
3. Press ENTER to move to the next comment field.
4. Continue to enter up to 16 comments.
5. Click on Save As to save the comment list
You may also retrieve, edit, and save comment lists from this window.

Custom 3D File
Custom 3D files make for logical navigation torugh a complex test component or
series of components within a single UltraMATE file. UltraMATE will produce a 3
dimensional file with custom names at each level.
The resulting file is displayed like this in UltraMATE. Each level tab, shown on
the bottom control. Within each level, are the sections, 1 through 10 and on each
section are 4 cells.
Custom 4D File
Custom 4D File types give the maximum flexability and design to handle complex
components or muntiple components within a single file.
The resulting file shows the structure of the 4 dimensional file. The combination
of the most significant level and the second level are totaled on the tab, shown
on the bottom control. Within each level, are the sections, 30 through 49 and on
each section are 2 points.
Custom Grid File
The Custom Grid allows the user to choose the name for each of a number of
separate grid locations.
The current location is show at the bottom of the window in }} {{.
In this example, the current location is "North".
NOTE!
Alphanumeric labels and file structures are not supported by all
instrument models. When uploading a file which uses alphanumeric
labels to an instrument which does not support this type of identifier,
UltraMATE will make the necessary substitutions.
Custom Linear File
The Custom Linear file type allows the operator to give each location an
alphanumeric name.
In this example, the locations are "Coil 1", "Coil 2", "Coil 3", and "Coil 4".
In this example, there are 4 data points per location. There may be as many as
999.
NOTE!
Alphanumeric labels and file structures are not supported by all
instrument models. When uploading a file which uses alphanumeric
labels to an instrument which does not support this type of identifier,
UltraMATE will make the necessary substitutions.
Custom Point File
The Custom Point file allows the operator to name both the location and the
points at each location.
NOTE!
Alphanumeric labels and file structures are not supported by all
instrument models. When uploading a file which uses alphanumeric
labels to an instrument which does not support this type of identifier,
UltraMATE will make the necessary substitutions.

Exporting Files - Copy & Paste
Any data appearing in an UltraMATE window can be copied into the Windows
Clipboard for pasting into another Windows application such as Word, Excel,
Access. This includes Data, Header, Statistics, Comments and Attachments.
To copy the Comment text, Header, File Statistics, or A-Scans into the
clipboard, open the display window containing the information you wish to copy
and press the Ctrl-C keys or select Edit from the menu bar and choose Copy.
Select the application you want to use and, if applicable, position the cursor at
the point where you wish the data to appear and press Ctrl-V to paste the
information, or use the applications Paste command usually found under the
EDIT menu (some applications may require the paste special function to insert
the different data formats).
With UltraMATE's support of the Windows clipboard Copy & Paste function,
traditional exporting is usually unnecessary.
Some applications, however, may require data to be in one of several standard
file formats such as ASCII (space delimited), Comma delimited, or Tab Delimited.
See saving file formats for exporting to DMSMATE, DATAMATE or ASCII files.
Extended Parameter Viewing
The DMS 2 Instrument supports Extended Reading Parameters. These
parameters are specific to each DR location. To view the extended reading
parameter information, open the Attachment window, then click on a cell.
Note the reading attachment window displays the reading location and the
thickness value. The Extended Reading Parameters are noted in the bottom
cell of the window.
In the comment view, when readings are taken, the attachment type is
designated with a small letter "p" below the location.
The linear view shows all extended reading information associated with each
measurement point.

DATAMATE files, A-Scan, B-Scan and MicroGRID attachments are not
supported and have to be deleted from the UltraMATE file before saving as a
