Selfless Service

The great Nammalwar had a great desire to remain in Tirumala all his life and do
the service of offering of flowers to Lord Venkateswara. This desire, which arose in his
mind in Alwar Tirunagari, could not be fulfilled. When Sri Ramanuja sought ways to
make the desire come true, his disciples remained silent. One disciple named
Ananthalwan decided to follow his Acharya’s wish of going to Tirumala and setting up a
garden, though it would mean being physically away from him. He expressed his
willingness to go and serve the Lord. At that time, Tirumala was a terrible forest with
fierce animals like tigers and leopards and also very poisonous serpents and other
poison-spewing creatures. The brave way in which Ananthalwan went to that terrible
place and proceeded to clear the forest and establish a garden elicited the admiration
of Ramanuja who thought of his disciple as a hero-warrior.

Temple Culture in South India

By fostering gardens for flowers which are very important

for worship in temples, it becomes possible to get fresh flowers
for puja. In performing flower-service to the Lord, Perialwar and
TondaradippodiAlwar gained ever-lasting fame. By growing herbs
along with flowers, nandavanas also help in curing people of
their sicknesses by applying herbal medicine. A standing witness
to this is the garden in the temple at Srirangam where
Garudavahana Panditha raised the temple to Dhanvantari.

Taking a Step Forward

Now-a-days nandavanas are not cared for in big and small

temples. Since devotees are not taking interest, they have
become thick with thorny bushes and have become useless. In
this thousandth year of Sri Ramanuja’s incarnation, by reviving
the nandavanas in the DivyaDesas, we will be able to get fresh
flowers for worship.
