landmasses and bodies of water.

Code:_____

II. REVIEW

Tell me your experience!

What is the name of the unforgettable typhoon you and your family
experienced?

Did you experienced flood and heavy rain? How does it affect your
family?

What did you learn from it?

III. STUDY AND LEARN

What is a Typhoon?

The term typhoon is used only in the Northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. The
equivalent term of typhoon is hurricane, this term used in the Northeastern part of Pacific
Ocean and Northern part of Atlantic Ocean. Typhoon and hurricane is just one of the many

When there is a typhoon we get a lot of rain and strong winds,
you may not notice but the winds in a typhoon move in a certain
direction. They go around the central areas. See the clouds in
spiral arrangement in figure 1.

Figure 1

They are being blown by winds in a counter- clockwise direction. In simple term tropical
cyclone is a system of thunderstorms that are moving around a center. As the winds
intensify or weaken, the category is upgraded or downgraded accordingly.

Table 1.

In the Phillippines, we use the same word for all categories of tropical cyclone, We simply call it
“Bagyo”

IV. DO THESE

Activity 1
Tropical Cyclone! How do you move?

Objective/s:
After performing this activity, you should be able to:

Materials Needed:
Two same size plastic bottle with caps
Masking tape
Drill

Procedure:
1. Place the two caps back to back. Wrap them with masking taped.
Wrap the tape around several times to make connection strong and
leak- proof.
2. Drill a hole through both of them, if you do not have a drill, use a
heater nail to make a hole. Figure 2

3. Fill one bottle with water.then screw one of the cap onto the bottle. Then screw the other
bottle onto the other cap. You should get the set-up in figure 3.

Figure 3

4. Now, turn the whole set-up so the filled bottle is on top. Shake the filled bottlewith
circular motio (counter- clockwise)until a whirpool is formed in the water (figure 3).

Question/s
1. In this simulation, what was the water represents?
2. What is the direction of the wind that the water represents?

Note: Try to have a picture of your self and your product while doing this simulation activity with
the help of your guardian.

V. WRAP-UP

The only difference between a hurricane and a typhoon is the location where

the storm occurs and the movement of their winds blown. The general term for
these two is tropical cyclone. There are five categories/calssification of
tropical cyclone. If the wind speed is up to 61 kph then it is called tropical

depression. If the wind speed is up to 62-88 kph, it is called tropical storm. If the wind speed
is up to 89-117 kph, it is called severe tropical storm. If the wind speed is up to 118-220 kph, it
is called typhoon, but in a super typhoon, the wind speed is exceeding or more than 220 kph.
