Tip switch

In normal condition, the shifting range according to the shift lever

position ;

• P : Park position

• R : Reverse

• N : Neutral

• D : 1st … 5th gear

• 4 : 1st … 3rd gear

• 2 : 1st … 2nd gear

But 55-51 LE utilizes various shifting modes to control precisely. Among

them ‘Winter” mode is selected by pushing the “Winter’ button and the
others such as Economy, Medium, Sport,Up-slope and Down-slope
modes are selected automatically by fuzzy logic.

The fuzzy logic is a kind of software, which is programmed to assess

driving conditions real time and decide which is the proper shifting
mode for that condition. Once the logic selected a shifting mode, the
transmission just would follow the pre-set shifting schedule. Afterward,
if driving condition is changed, the fuzzy logic assesses the condition
again. It changes the shifting mode accordingly.

Control Functions 03-11

Automatic
1. Fuzzy Control Transmission
1) Shift Control and L-Up control
According to each shift schedule, TCM sends signals to the S1, S2, S3, Participant’s
Handout
S4, S5 which operates ON/OFF control “Shift Control” and the SLU
which operates linear control “L-up Control” on the basis of the vehicle
speed and the throttle opening.

55-51SN for GM DAEWOO does not have several driving mode that
user can select. Basically TCM programmed for “Economy mode”, but
TCM changes to several shift schedule automatically according to
specified condition. But, only “Winter mode” can be chosen by the
switch.

A) Adaptive shift control (Economy, Medium, Sport mode)

Economy mode is used for normal driving condition after IG ON. And
driver’s liking is detected by using fuzzy logic from accelerator
operation. This control changes shift points to Economy (low speed),
Medium (middle speed) and Sport (high speed) according to the liking
degree.

Start(1) & (2) (1) "D" (2) Vehicle speed >=5 km/h

(1) Except "D" (2) Vehicle speed < 240 km/h

End (1) or (2) or(3)
(3) Driver's liking detection is Econom y mode

B) Winter mode
This mode is used for vehicle start on a slippery road due to pushing the
winter mode switch. (Vehicle start in 3rd gear)

Transmission C) Up-Slope Mode
When TCM detects upslope from load of engine torque and decrease of
Participant’s acceleration, this mode changes shift points in high-speed side
Handout
according to the upslope degree and avoids busy shift of A/T.

D) Down-Slope Mode
If When TCM detects down slope from increase of acceleration with
accelerator full close, this mode operates moderate engine brake by
changing shift points in high-speed side.

E) Hot Mode control

This control lowers ATF temperature by changing shift points when the
temperature is extremely high.(ATF Temp. > 140 degree C)

F) Altitude control
This control makes up for low engine power by establishing shift points
at a slightly higher vehicle speed range in high altitude where air
pressure is low.

G) Cold off set control

This control makes up for low engine torque by establishing shift points
at a slightly higher vehicle speed range when air temperature is
extremely low. (Engine water temp. < -30 degree C)

2) Manual shift control(Tip mode) Transmission
Driver oneself can select favorite gear and enjoy sports driving of
manual transmission sense by shifting shift lever from “D” to manual Participant’s
Handout
gear position and MAN+(Up shift) / MAN-(Down shift). But L-up control
is operated automatically. Shift control is operated again by shifting from
manual gear position to “D”.

3) L-up cut control

This control cuts L-up operation at shift down or idle condition and avoid
engine stall by depressing brake pedal at low speed driving..

4) Up / Down learning control

This control learns the pressure to each clutch or brake in order to
reduce shifting shock at each shifting (Up, Down, Manual down,
Coast down).
< Learning control method >
(1) 65 degree C =< Oil temperature < 110 degree C
(2) Constant low throttle opening (about 20-30%)
(3) Plenty shifting interval (about 3 sec)
(4) Repeat each shifting about 10 times

5) N-D shift control

This control improves the N-D shift quality due to controlling SLT
according to C1piston stroke learned in N-D learning control and
applying best hydraulic pressure to C1 clutch at N-D shift.

6) N-D learning control

This control learns the C1 hydraulic pressure due to monitoring a C1
clutch engaging time and a rotation change rate.
(1) 500rpm =< Engine speed < 1,200 rpm

Start (2) 65 degree C =< oil temperature < 110 degree

(1) & (2) & (3) & (4) (3) 450 rpm =< C1 revolution < 1,200 rpm

(4) Throttle opening < 3.0 %

< Learning control method >

(1) When above start condition
(2) Shifting interval more than 3 sec
(3) Repeat N-D shifting about 10 times

Transmission 7) N-R shift control
This control improves the N-R shift quality due to controlling SLS
Participant’s according to C2 piston stroke learned in N-R learning control and
Handout
applying best hydraulic pressure to C2 clutch at N-R shift.

8) N-R learning control

This control learns the C2 hydraulic pressure due to monitoring a C2
clutch engaging time and a rotation change rate.

(1) 500rpm =< Engine speed < 1,200 rpm

Start (2) 65 degree C =< oil temperature < 110 degree C
(1) & (2) &
(3) & (4) (3) 450 rpm =< C1 revolution < 1,200 rpm
(4) Throttle opening < 3.0 %
< Learning control method >
(1) When above start condition
(2) Shifting interval more than 3 sec
(3) Repeat N-R shifting about 10 times

9) Torque reduction control

This control improves the shift quality due to sending torque reduction
request signal from TCM to ECM and cutting engine torque increase of
shift at N-D shift, N-R shift and 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 - 5.
If accelerator pedal is depressed rapidly, this control establishes the
upper limit value of engine torque and avoids “Engine flare” at 2 - 3,
3 - 4 and 4=>2 of “clutch to clutch shift”.

10) Diagnosis
This function constantly monitors operation of sensors, solenoids and
other electronic parts installed. If there occurs a malfunction with any of
these parts, “Lamp” on an instrument panel turns on, which is a sign of
A/T malfunction to a driver (On board diagnosis).
It is possible to detect the malfunction location due to using only tester.
(Off board diagnosis) And it is possible to delete a DTC and a learning
value due to using only Scan tool.

11) Fail safe Transmission
Even if trouble such as a solenoid or a sensor occurs by any chance,
TCM controls a signal to an electronic part, and controls as minimum Participant’s
Handout
driving becomes possible.
Refer to “TROUBLESHOOTING ” regarding DTC and fail safe.

12) Adaptation guideline

[ NOTE ]
After replacement of A/T, TCM or Soft ware (Updating), adapted data
must be cleared and re-adaptation is required.

A) Warming up vehicle
It is necessary to rises up ATF temperature until 65-110 degree C by
keeping the vehicle as idle condition or driving in a city. Confirm ATF
temperature by tester.
Please DO NOT MAKE STALL TEST for rise up ATF temperature.
[NOTE]
Adaptation is possible only when ATF temperature is between 65 and
110 (Only Up/Down learning control is between 40 and 110 degree C.)
B) Adaptation for N-D & N-R garage shifting
Keep vehicle is stationary with applying brake. Shift from “N” to “R” and
hold “R” more than 3 seconds, then back to “N”. Repeat shifting
“N”=>“R”=>”N” 5 times.
Likewise, repeat “N”=>“D”=>”N” 5 times.

Transmission C) Adaptation for Up/Down shifting
Accelerate until over 50 km/h in 4th gear with 15 ~20% throttle opening
Participant’s in “D”. Then decelerate by applying brake until vehicle in stationary.
Handout
(It must spend more than 14 seconds from starting of deceleration until
stopping.) Repeat above step 5 times.
In case if throttle opening percentage monitoring is not available, take
30 seconds for reaching 50 km/h under the constant throttle opening
condition in “D” position. Repeat above step 5 times.

1>2>3>4 4>3>2>1

D) Adaptation for 4 > 2 Manual down shift

1. Inspect ATF level
(1) Confirm oil temperature is hot condition (60-70 degree C).
< CAUTION > ATF level is different from hot condition of cold condition.
Therefore inspect ATF level on hot condition.
(2) Shift the shift lever into all range and return to “P” with engine idling.
(3) Park vehicle on a level surface.
(4) Inspect that ATF level is in “HOT” range after pulling out level gauge
and wipe it out. Inspect by low level if ATF level is different from front
side and back side.
< CAUTION >
Using AW appointed ATF is main premise to function slip control
correctly. Therefore make sure to use AW appointed ATF by all means.

3. Oil Color
Inspect ATF condition “no mixing of metal particles and disc lining
powder too much”,“smell burnt”, “black” and “no white-colored
contamination”.
IMPORTANCE OF ATF
When failure is inside A/T, almost ATF condition change and it is key of
trouble-shooting.
(1) ATF level
-Lack of ATF volume: A/T function failure due to line pressure drop by air
suction of O/P.
-Over level ATF volume: ATF shall blow off from breather tube due to oil
level increase by stirring and making bubbles inside of A/T.
(2) ATF condition
- Correct ATF: Red color and moderate viscosity
- Abnormal ATF: Mixing of water or different ATF will cause “shock”,
“harsh shift”, “ bad durability of A/T” and “bad characteristics of discs
and sealing materials”.
