Mathematical analysis I & Linear algebra


(Mathematics I) (6 ECTS)
MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS I

Sequences of real numbers, convergence tests. Series of real numbers,


convergence tests. Functions of real numbers. Trigonometrical functions.
Hyperbolic functions. Continuous functions. Derivatives of functions.
Fundamental theorems. Power series. Taylor and Maclaurin series. The
Riemann integral of a real-valued function. Applications. Generalized
integrals. Applications.
LINEAR ALGEBRA

Vector calculus, lines and planes in 3-space. The basic surfaces. Matrices,
determinants and linear systems. Linear spaces (introduction, linear
subspace, linear independence, basic, dimension, sum of subspaces). Linear
mappings (basic definitions, the matrix of a linear mapping, the basic
geometric transformations, change of basis). Eigenvalues and eigenvectors
of linear transformations and matrices (characteristic polynomial, Cayley-
Hamilton theorem, matix diagonalization). Orthogonal and symmetric
matrices.

Mathematics II (4 ECTS)
MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS II

The Euclidean space R^. Functions between Euclidean spaces, limit and
continuity of functions. Differentiation of vector-valued functions of a single
variable, application in mechanics and differential geometry, polar,
cylindrical and spherical coordinates. Differentiable functions (partical
derivatives, directional derivatives, differential). Vector fields. Gradient-
divergence-curl. Fundamental theorems of differentiable functions (mean
value theorem, Taylor). Inverse function theorem. Implicit function
theorems. Functional dependence. Local and conditional extremes. Double
and triple integrals: definitions, integrability criteria, properties. Change of
variables, applications. Contour integrals: Contour integral of the first and
second kind, contour integrals independent of path, Green’s Theorem,
simply and multiply connected domains of R^2 and R^3. Elements of
surface theory. Surface integrals of the first and second kind. Fundamental
theorems of vector analysis (Stokes and Gauss) applications.

Differential equations (5 ECTS)


Introduction to differential equations (definitions). First order differential
equations (separable variables, total differential and Euler multiplier, linear,
Bernoulli, homogeneous Riccati, Clairaut, Lagrange). Qualitative theory of
differential equations (general). Higher order linear differential equations
(general theory). Linear differential equations with constant coefficients
(solution of linear equations, variation of parameter method, method of
undetermined coefficients, Euler’s differential equations, applications).

Solving methods with computer (Matlab) (4 ECTS)


Laboratory

-No Linear equations: Numerical approximate method, Newton-Raphson


method, intersecting method, wrong position method, dichotomous method.

-Polyonymic equations: calculation of polynomial value, calculation of


polynomial derivative values at a known point, solution of polynomial
equation.

-Linear equation systems: (a) Direct methods: Gauss methods, (b) Repetitive
methods: Jacobi method, Gauss-Seidel method.

-Interference: linear - exponential - polynomial - multiple linear approach.

-Numerical integration: table rule, Simpson rule, general type of arithmetic


integration with a polynomial approach, completion according to Gauss.

-Numerical solution of Differential equations: one-step methods (Euler,


Taylor. Runge-Kuta), multi-step methods (prediction and correction,
Adams-Moulton).

Probability & Statistics (4 ECTS)


Types of statistical data and ways of presenting them (distributions, tables,
diagrams). Basic characteristics of arithmetic data (position, dispersion,
form). Introductory concepts in probability and probability distributions
(classic probability, committed probability, Bayes type, total probability
theorem, binomial distribution, Poisson distribution, normal distribution,
Student distribution). Assessment (sampling distributions, confidence
intervals). Case checks (average control, percentage control, two-way
difference test, two percent difference test, two-variable speech test,
property independence test). Linear correlation. Linear regression (simple
and multiple). Applications in the science of civil engineering.

Static analysis with matrices (6 ECTS)


The Direct Stiffness Method and its application in the analysis of framed
structures. Vectors of nodal forces and nodal displacements of an element.
Transformation matrices. Stiffness matrices of plane truss and plane frame
elements. Formulation of nodal load, nodal displacement and global stiffness
matrices of the structure. Structure support. Calculation of structure’s nodal
displacements and elements’ nodal forces.
Introduction to the dynamic analysis. Dynamic loads. Free and forced
vibrations of single-degree-of-freedom systems. Damping. Simulation and
analysis of a single and two degrees of freedom systems. Free and forced
vibrations of multi-degree-of-freedom systems. The finite element method
for the dynamic analysis of framed structures. Static condensation.
Eigenmode analysis.

Introduction to the method of Finite elements (5 ECTS)


Introduction in the Finite Element Method (FEM). General description of the
FEM. Displacements method. Plane finite elements. Three dimensional and
axisymmetric finite elements. General families of elements and
isoparametric elements. Generalization of the Finite Element Method.
Weighed Residual Method (Variational Methods, Rayleigh-Ritz Method).
Fluid and Heat conduction field problems. Elasto-Dynamic field problems
(static and dynamic behaviour). Incompressible and non-Newtonian
materials (application in the simulation of structural problems). Methods for
the solution of large systems in the FEM. Pre-processing and post-
processing of data and other techniques in the FEM. The errors in the FEM.
Operational research (4 ECTS)
The fundamentals of Operational Research are taught in this course. Focus is
given to Operational research methodological approaches and techniques
which are often used in order to solve operational problems typically faced
by Engineers. The aim is to equip graduates of the Department of Civil
Engineering with the appropriate theoretical and practical knowledge and
skills in mathematical modeling and methods to solve decision
problems. Except of the fundamental topics of linear programming and its
applications, the curricula includes methods used to solve problems such as
the transportation problem, assignment problem, Projects’ Time and Cost
Programming, Network Analysis etc.

“introduction to the method of finite elements”. These subjects belong to the
current semester I am at. I am going to write the final exam in 2 weeks time.
