What Is An Operating System?

An operating system (OS) manages all computer hardware and software, acting as an interface between users and hardware. It performs basic tasks like input/output processing and runs other programs. The OS coordinates access to the CPU, memory, and storage so multiple programs can run simultaneously. MS-DOS, introduced by Microsoft in 1981, was a non-graphical command line OS derived from 86-DOS for IBM compatible computers. It allowed users to manipulate files and run programs from commands instead of a graphical user interface.

What is an Operating System?

An operating system (OS) is system software that manages all peripheral hardware in a

computer and user software. it acts as an interface between the end user and computer hardware.
Every computer must have at least one OS to run other programs.

Computer operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard,
sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the storage drives,
and controlling peripheral devices, such as printers.

Most of the time, there are several different computer programs running at the same time, and
they all need to access your computer's central processing unit (CPU), memory, and storage.
The operating system coordinates all of this to make sure each program gets what it needs.

What is Disk Operating System?

Any operating system (program) which runs from the hard disk drive is termed as Disk
Operating System ( D.O.S ). This also refers to the specific family of disk operating system
which is also known as MS-DOS or Microsoft disk operating system. Anything which
commands and controls the computer’s hardware and its peripheral devices with control over the
program and its functionality is known as the operating system. This operating system which
runs through the hard disk is known as a disk operating system. For the very first time, It was
made and introduced for IBM by Microsoft which was known as IBM PC DOS in the year 1981.
List of DOS made from 1981 – 1998 are as follows :

Discuss briefly about MS-DOS.

MS-DOS

Short for Microsoft Disk Operating System, MS-DOS is a non-graphical command line

operating system derived from 86-DOS that was created for IBM compatible computers. MS-
DOS originally written by Tim Paterson and introduced by Microsoft in August 1981 and was
last updated in 1994 when MS-DOS 6.22 was released. MS-DOS allows the user to navigate,
open, and otherwise manipulate files on their computer from a command line instead of
a GUI like Windows.
Today, MS-DOS is no longer used; however, the command
shell, more commonly known as the Windows command
line is still used by many users. The bottom image is an
example of a Windows command line window running in
Microsoft Windows 10.

MS-DOS (shorthand for Microsoft Disk Operating System) is a single tasking, single user,
non-graphical command line operating system. Originally developed for use with IBM’s
earliest line of personal home computers, MS-DOS is one of the most successful operating
systems of its kind. As an operating system, DOS is simple, compact, and remarkably
robust; especially considering its age. While it may have been surpassed by the newer, and
more user friendly, graphical user interface (GUI) operating systems, MS-DOS remains in
widespread use by businesses and independent programmers throughout the world.

MS-DOS is a text-based operating system, meaning that a user works with a keyboard to input
data and receives output in plain text. Later, MS-DOS often had programs using a mouse and
graphics to make work more simple and quick. (Some people still believe that working without
graphics is really more efficient.) It is called a disk operating system because it was originally
made to be loaded into a computer's memory with a floppy disk each time the computer is started
(booted) up.
