For E.G. If The Code For 'TOWN' Is 'UQZR', Then What Will Be Coded As 'WKOPFML' ?

This document provides examples of different types of coding and decoding questions: 1. Words coded by shifting letters alphabetically forward or backward in set patterns. 2. Words coded using reverse alphabetical order or a mix of normal and reverse orders. 3. Words coded by replacing letters with numerical positions or operations on positions. 4. Numbers coded using letter-number correspondences or mathematical operations on digits. 5. Words coded as puzzled statements where each letter represents a word. 6. Groups of words coded as other groups of words or vice versa through identifying common words and codes. 7. Numbers can also be coded as groups of puzzled words through identifying common numbers and codes.

01 EXAMPLE

Words coded by shifting their alphabetical location in normal order

This type of questions will give the coded form for a word and will ask either of the following:
A. The coded form for some other word.
B. The original word whose coded form will be given.
We need to identify the logic of the code.
In this type, each letter in the word is replaced by a letter which is some definite position(s) ahead of the
alphabet to be replaced.
For e.g. If the code for 'TOWN' is 'UQZR', then what will be coded as 'WKOPFML' ?
Here, we can observe that T(+1 letter) U; O(+ 2 letters)Q; W (+3 letters) Z; N(+4 letters) R. Thus, we observe that
each letter is pushed ahead successively by increasing number of letters (+1,+2,+3,+4...) to get the coded word.
So, to obtain the original word whose coded form is given as 'WKOPFML', we will apply the reverse operation of
moving backwards.
W( -1 letter) V; K( -2 letters) I; O( -3 letters) L ; P( -4 letters)L; F( -5 letters)A; M( -6 letters)G; L( -7 letters)E.
So, the answer is 'VILLAGE'

02 EXAMPLE

Words coded by shifting their alphabetical location in reverse alphabetical order.

This type of questions will give the coded form for a word and will ask either of the following:
A. The coded form for some other word.
B. The original word whose coded form will be given.

Usually the logic behind this type of coding is of the following forms:
A. The given word is written backwards, i.e. the last letter is written first, second last letter is written second..and so
on..the first letter is written as the last letter.
For e.g. TELEPHONE is written as ENOHPELET
B. Each letter in the word is replaced by a letter which is some definite position(s) backwards of the alphabet to be
replaced.(Reverse alphabetical order)
For e.g. STUDENT is written as RSTCDMS
Here, S(-1 letter) R; T(-1 letter)S; U(-1 letter)T; D(-1 letter)C; E(-1 letter)D; N(-1 letter)M; T(-1 letter)S;

B. The original word whose coded form will be given.

Usually the logic behind this type of coding is of the following forms:
A. The given word is written backwards, i.e. the last letter is written first, second last letter is written second..and so
on..the first letter is written as the last letter. For e.g. TELEPHONE is written as ENOHPELETB.
B. Each letter in the word is replaced by a letter which is some definite position(s) forward/backward from the
alphabet to be replaced.
For e.g. STUDENT is written as TUVEFOU (Normal Order) Or STUDENT is written as RSTCDMS (Reverse
alphabetic Order)
C. Pair of (some) consecutive letters in the word is reversed, following which the position of the pairs is
interchanged and written as code
For e.g.
1. 'AFFAIR' is coded as 'FAAFRI' (Only pairs of letters are reversed)
2. 'PRACTICE' is coded as 'PICCTRAE' (Except First and Last letters, pairs are interchanged ).

04 EXAMPLE

Words coded by numerical codes

This type of questions will give the numerically coded form for a word and will ask either of the following:
A.The coded form for some other word.
B.The original word whose coded form will be given.

Usually the logic behind this type of coding is of the following forms:
A. The word may be coded by the number corresponding to the number of letters in that word.
For e.g. 'DRINK' is coded as '5' and 'POLLUTION' is coded as '9'.

B. Each letter of the word will be replaced by its position number in the alphabet ( A = 1, B = 2, C = 3,....) Or by it
position if numbering were done from the end (Z = 1, Y =2, X = 3,...)
Also, each letter after being replaced by its position number can be increased/decreased by some definite number
to get the numerical code.
For e.g. 'VISHAL' is coded as '22102111517
Here, V(22) I(9) S(19) H(8) A(1) L(12) are the position numbers of the letters. Each of these are increased
successively by 0,1,2,3..to get the coded word. (22, 10, 21, 11, 5,17). Thus code is 22102111517.

C.The numerical code is the result of some mathematical operation done on the positions of the letters in the
word.
For e.g.
1.DENT is coded as 65
D = 23; E = 22; N = 13; T = 07; Numbering from the end. (23+22+13+07 =65)
2. LD is coded as 48 (L = 12, D = 4 ; 12 X 4 = 48) and SD is coded as 76 (S =19; D = 4; 19 X 4 = 76 )

05 EXAMPLE

Numbers coded by alphabetical codes

This type of questions will give the alphabetically coded form for a number and will ask either of the following:
A.The coded form for some other number.
B.The original number whose coded form will be given.

Usually the logic behind this type of coding is of the following forms:
A. There can be direct one to one correspondence between the letter and the digit for it in the code.
For e.g '3456' is coded as 'ROPE' and '15526' is coded as 'APPLE'
Here, 5 is coded as P; 6 is coded as E and so on.
B.The addition of two numbers or multiplication of two numbers is written step-by-step in terms of alphabets and
the value of one (or more) alphabets is given. We have to decode for all the other alphabets.
For e.g T X L
+ X T L
---------------
A L T
Here L stands for 7. Decode for other alphabets.
C. The code is given in a matrix form. The alphabet can be decoded by looking up proper row and column in the
given matrix.

06 EXAMPLE

Numbers are coded in Numbers using mathematical operations

This type of questions will give the coded form for a number and will ask either of the following:
A.The coded form for some other number.
B.The original number whose coded form will be given.
Usually the logic behind this type of coding is of the following form:
A. The number is coded according to some mathematical operation performed on its digits.
For e.g. 63 is coded as 20 and 95 is coded as 47.
Here, 6 X 3 = 18 + 2 = 20 ; 9 X 5 = 45 + 2 = 47.

07 EXAMPLE

Words are coded in form of puzzled statements

https://www.toppr.com/learn/class-11/logical-reasoning/coding-decoding/concepts/ 3/6
11/23/2019 Toppr

In this type of questions, words stand for statements.

So,each letter can be associated with a word from the statement. The question will then ask to code another
statement.
For e.g. 'FOR' stands for 'old is gold'; 'ROT' stands for 'gold is pure'; 'ROM' stands for 'gold is costly'. How will 'pure
old gold is costly' be written ?
Here, O stands for 'is'. R stands for 'gold'. F stands for 'old'. T stands for ' pure'. M stands for 'costly'. So, 'pure old
gold is costly' can be written as 'TFROM'

08 EXAMPLE

Group of words are coded in form of group of puzzled words.

In this type of questions, small sentences are coded as group of puzzled words.
To solve such type of questions, we must identify the word repeating in two or more given sentences and also the
coded word repeating in their corresponding coded groups. We can thus work out the code for each of the given
words.
For e.g.
a. Drink fruit juice is coded as "tee see pee"
b. Juice is sweet is coded as "see kee lee"
c. He is intelligent is coded as "lee ree mee"
In the above code, how is 'sweet' coded ?

From a and b, juice is the common word and 'see' is the common coded word.
So, Juice is coded as 'see'
Similarly from b and c, 'is' is coded as 'lee'
So,in b, the remaining word, 'sweet' is coded as 'kee'

09 EXAMPLE

Group of puzzled words are coded in form of group of words

In this type of questions, groups of puzzled words are coded as small sentences.
To solve such type of questions, we must identify the word repeating in two or more given puzzled groups and also
the coded word repeating in their corresponding coded groups. We can thus work out the code for each of the given
words.
For e.g.
a. 'il be pee' means 'roses are blue',
b. 'silk hee' means 'red flowers'
c. 'pee mit hee' means 'flowers are vegetables'.
How is 'red' written in this code ?

https://www.toppr.com/learn/class-11/logical-reasoning/coding-decoding/concepts/ 4/6
11/23/2019 Toppr

Here, in b and c, 'hee' is the common puzzled word and 'flowers' is the common code word. So, 'hee' is coded as
'flowers'.
Then, in b, red is coded for 'silk'.

10 EXAMPLE

Numbers are coded in form of group of puzzled words.

In this type of questions, numbers are coded as group of puzzled words.
To solve such type of questions, we must identify the number repeating in two or more given examples and also the
coded word repeating in their corresponding coded groups. We can thus work out the code for each of the given
numbers.
For e.g.
a. '851' means 'good sweet fruit',
b. '783' means 'good red rose'
c. '341' means 'rose and fruit'.
Which digit stands for 'sweet' in that language ?

From a and b, 8 is the repeating digit and 'good' is the repeating word.
Similarly, from b and c, 3 is the repeating digit and rose is the repeating word.
So, in a, 5 must stand for 'sweet'.

11 EXAMPLE

Group of puzzled words are coded in form of numbers

In this type of questions, a group of puzzled words is coded in the form of numbers.
To solve such type of questions, we must identify the word repeating in two or more given groups of puzzled words
and also the number repeating in their corresponding coded numbers. We can thus work out the code for each of the
given words.
For e.g.
a. 'good sweet fruit' means '851',
b. 'good red rose' means '783'
c. 'rose and fruit' means '341'
Which word stands for '5' in that language ?

From a and b, 8 is the repeating digit and 'good' is the repeating word.
Similarly, from b and c, 3 is the repeating digit and rose is the repeating word.
So, in a, 5 must stand for 'sweet'.
