X−μ S n x n: Statement: The Time (In Minutes) Spent By 10 Randomly Selected

The document presents the results of a t-test to analyze if the average time spent by 10 randomly selected customers using the internet in a cyber café is more than 30 minutes at a 5% level of significance. The sample mean time was calculated as 42.8 minutes. The calculated t-value of 2.610614453 was greater than the critical t-value of 2.262157163 with 9 degrees of freedom and a significance level of 5%, so the null hypothesis that the average time is less than or equal to 30 minutes was rejected. It was concluded that the average time spent by customers is more than 30 minutes.

PRACTICAL 5

STATEMENT : THE TIME (IN MINUTES) SPENT BY 10 RANDOMLY SELECTED

CUSTOMERS USING THE INTERET IN A CYBER CAFÉ IS AS FOLLOWS :
35,20,39,45,69,40,65,40,25,50. CAN YOU SAY THAT THE AVERAGE TIME SPENT BY
CUSTOMERS IS MORE THAN 30 MINUTES AT 5% LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE?

WORKING EXPRESSION:
a. Small sample test (t test): When the sample size is less than or equal to 30 then the
sampling distribution of the sample mean follows student’s t distribution. The t test is
defines as the ratio of difference between t and E (t) to the S.E (t).
X−μ
S
tcal= √n

∑ ( x−x )2
where
X=
∑x
n ,S= √ n−1 is the unbiased estimate of population standard deviation
Let us consider sample of size n (n<30) has been drawn from the normal population with
unknown variance.

TEST STATISTICS:
We need to find the calculated value here. Tcal can be tabulated from the following expression:
X−μ
S
tcal = √n

X=
∑x 1
X 2 −n X 2 )
n
( ∑
where, , = n−1 .
LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE:
α is the level of significance. In case α is not given, we consider it to be 0.05, S2 (sample
∑ ( x −x )2
mean square) = n−1 .
CRITICAL VALUE:
Critical or tabulated value of t is obtained from table according to the level of significance,
degree of freedom and alternative hypothesis.

CALCULATION:
We calculated the value of Ttab using Ms- Excel and the obtained data are as follows:

SN items/statement symbol value

1 null hypothesis h0:u=u0
2 alternative hypothesis
3 population mean u 30
4 sample mean   42.8
5 sample size   10
6 s.e of sample mean   4.903060269
7 sample sd   15.50483795
8 t cal   2.610614453
9 level of significance   0.05
10 degree of freedom n-1 9
11 t tab   2.262157163
12 decision   we reject H0

DECISION:
Since ttab > tcal so we reject H0.
RESULT:
Using excel formula, the calculated value and tabulated value from the given data were
2.610614453 and 2.262157163.
CONCLUSION:
The average time spent by customers is more than 30 minutes.
