USE OF ELECTRONIC CALCULATORS IN

SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS EXAMINATIONS

Instruction booklets or cards (e.g., reference cards) on the operation of calculators are NOT permitted in
the examination room. Candidates are expected to familiarise themselves with the calculator's operation
beforehand.

Calculators that have been approved for use in School of Economics examinations are listed in
Table 1 below.

Students seeking approval for the use of any scientific calculator that is not listed in Table 1 should
contact their course coordinator. Approval will be granted only after checking the features listed in
calculator’s manual. Thus, students seeking approval for the use of a calculator that is not currently
approved must make the manual available to the course coordinator.

The list will be closed to updating on 27 August, 2007 and will not re-opened until semester 1 2008.
Features of approved calculators

In addition to the features of a basic (four operation) calculator, a scientific calculator typically includes
the following:

• fraction keys (for fraction arithmetic)

• a percentage key
• a π key
• memory access keys
• an EXP key and a sign change (+/-) key
• square (x2) and square root (√) keys
• logarithm and exponential keys (base 10 and base e)
• a power key (ax, xy or similar)
• trigonometrical function keys with an INVERSE key for the inverse functions
• a capacity to work in both degree and radian mode
• a reciprocal key (1/x)
• permutation and/or combination keys (nPr , nCr)
• cube and/or cube root keys
• parentheses keys
• statistical operations such as mean and standard deviation
• metric or currency conversion.

Features that are NOT permitted include:

• programmable (any calculator that can have a sequence of operations stored and then executed
automatically is considered programmable and hence not allowed)
• a set of keys whose primary function is to represent the characters of the alphabet (e.g., any
calculator with a full QWERTY keyboard)
• capable of storing alphanumeric data input by a user (this does not exclude calculators with
memories that are used to store intermediate numerical results obtained during calculations and
required later)
• capable of storing, manipulating or graphing functions entered in symbolic form (this includes
calculators with a graphic display capacity)
• capable of performing ‘hard-wired’ numerical routines for operations such as differentiation and
the solution of equations
• capable of performing ‘hard-wired’ symbolic manipulations such as addition of algebraic
expressions, binomial expansion and symbolic differentiation.

For example, calculators that are NOT approved under this policy include the Sharp EL-506R, Sharp
EL-546L, Casio fx-95, Casio fx-95MS, Casio fx-100MS, Casio fx-100W, Casio fx-115MS, Casio fx-
115W, Casio fx-500, Casio fx-570MS, Casio fx-570W, Casio fx-912MS, Casio fx-991W, Casio fx-
991ES, Casio fx-991MS, Casio fx-3950P, Texas TI-30XIIS, Texas TI-30XIIB and Texas TI-83.
