OF HYDRAULIC CEMENT
(ASTM C 183 – 02)
I. OBJECTIVE
To rationalize the procedures for sampling and for the amount of testing of hydraulic
cement after it has been produced and offered in the market.
Cement and concrete standards (ASTM, AASHTO, etc.) are basically needed for the
evaluation and testing of the concrete, cement, and aggregates. These standards ensure
the quality, like strength and safety of the manufactured products like cement offered in the
market for selling.
ASTM C183- 02 (older version of ASTM C183- 16) rationalize the procedures for
sampling and testing of hydraulic cement after it has been produced and offered for selling
(not intended for quality control purposes during manufacturing). The procedures shown
includes the amount of testing to be done as well as the guidance for reporting on
conformance and non- conformance of cements with requirements of purchase
specifications.
Hydraulic cement to be used in field should strictly meet all the requirements of the
relevant purchase specifications that most of the building codes and construction
qualifications require. If there are codes or specifications that require sampling of the
manufactured cement, although there were only few that is sold on the basis of such
sampling and testing, these provisions are applicable; (1)The procedures that are presented
on the standard shall be done by the or for purchasers of hydraulic cement, (2) The testing
is done using the specified methods whether the samples conformed to the specification,
and the test itself serves as a basis for acceptance or rejection of the lot of material
sampled.
Procedure for the sampling of masonry cement (Specification C91), Portland cement
(Specification C150), blended hydraulic cement (Specification C845), plastic stucco cement
(Specification C1328), mortar cement (Specification C1329), and hydraulic cement based on
a performance specification (Specification C1157), are referred to the procedure for
sampling of ASTM C183- 02 or the standard practice for sampling and the amount of testing
of hydraulic cement.
It is neither intended nor required that all cements be tested using all the test methods
referenced in Section 2. Addition to this, a useful discussion of sampling and testing cement
is contained in ACI 225.1R.
Grab sample is a term used to define a cement sample collected from a conveyor, bulk
storage, or a bulk shipment in one operation. Grab sample can also depict a sample
acquired using an automatic sampling device that ceaselessly samples a cement stream
during a 10- minute interval. Composite sample is the combination of the grab samples
obtained with the directed intervals at a period of time.
Technically, all the samples whether it is composite or grab should weigh at least 5kg
(10lb). The sampling, packing, and shipping of samples might be supervised by an assigned
representative of the purchaser if the purchase contract specified, which also tells who will
pay the cost for the sampling, packing, and shipping of samples. The sample should be
numbered consecutively in which the samples are taken and strictly packed in an air- tight,
moisture- proof receptacle.
NOTE 1--- “Polyvinyl chloride sample containers, upon occasion, have been found to affect the air- entraining
potential of a cement sample. The same problem might be experienced with containers made from other
plastics.”
