Abstract

Coming to school late has become a major problem in many schools. It also becomes a
cancer that destroys the performance of the students and all the activities in school will be
affected.
The purpose of this study is to find out those reasons why students come to school late.
To carry out the study, the Saint Columban College Junior High School Department Grade 10 –
Saint James Students (Group 1) conducted a study which is to identify the reasons why students
come to school late and their reasons for their tardiness.
A qualitative approach was used to draw data from Grade 7 students in SCCJHS. In order
for us to complete this study, we, the researchers used the convenience sample to gather data
from those people or students who can relate to the topic through conducting survey. The
findings reveal that there are many reasons on why students come to school late, and each reason
differs from each other.
The number of students coming to school late is increasing and we the researcher’s wants
to solve this kind of issue by raising awareness to students. Therefore, in order for us to lessen
the number of students coming to school late, we would like to have a room to room orientation
so that the students would be aware about the possible effects if they continue to come to school
late.

I. Introduction

Every problem has solution. And the best way to escape from your problem is to solve them.
One if the major problem in school now a day is student tardiness. The number of student
coming to school late is increasing and this is our problem, a big problem that every school is
facing now. Because of this, some of the students failed in their academic performance, and so
every school must encourage their students to be punctual in school. Not just in school but also
in different aspects of their life.

Statement of the Problem

The number of late students is increasing and the purpose of this study is a close look at
the reasons why students come to school late. In spite of the efforts made by the teachers and the
school authorities to solve this problem, the students were still found satisfy in late coming to
school because they always do those things that can make them a late comer. And this is a
problem, a problem that the students will be better guided and ways of overcoming their
problems such as this kind of situation which is student’s lateness at school. In addition, this
study will also help us to know the main reasons or factors of all the late comers of why he/she
comes to school late. These are the following questions will help us to conduct our survey:
1. Why do students come to school late?
2. What are their reasons for their tardiness?

The Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to know and identify the reasons for student’s lateness to
school.It is also to establish why tardiness has persisted to be a nonstop problem in learning
despite various measures taken by school administrators and teachers to control it. By applying a
broad action research methodology, the study can determine how to resolve the problem of
tardiness in conducting a survey in order for us to know the reasons so that we can resolve it.

Significance of the Study

This study will help us to know the reasons why they come to school late. This research
will determine the level of the tardiness of SCCJHS students and if it is an urgent call of concern
for the institution. This research also will help students realize the effects of their tardiness on
themselves and also on the community. The results of this research may also help them
understand and their usual reasons for tardiness and hopefully help and motivate them to adjust
their habits. Moreover, this research may also be a help to teachers. Teachers may be able to
realize that they have a certain influence to the tardiness of students. They may find the need to
modify their personal and teaching habits and fully serve as role model to students both in terms
of punctuality and education.   Furthermore, this research may be useful to the SCCJHS
administrators. The results of this research may help the administrators see if the students are
becoming too tardy that it may be a threat to the quality and competency level of the school. In
addition, other schools and even workplaces can adapt the study and find out the tardiness of
their students and members and pinpoint the associated reasons.

Review of Related Literature

In recent years, students of different schools have become a recurrent issue which is the
lateness to school. Coming to school late has become a major problem in many schools
nowadays. Several factorsthat may be responsible for lateness to school among students
especially among high school learners are the kind of activities they engaged before sleeping
such as playing mobile games and watching televisions. Others complained that they have lots of
unfinished activities to write onand to be submitted on the following day. These factors may
affect the time they wake up in time in the morning – (Pedagogical Research, 2017, 0(2), 04 lssn-
2648-1429).
According to Luisa Hays (UNE 615), there are many possibilities for students being late
to classes. The most practical reason to be late to class are students who are not taking
responsibility for themselves and students who does not ponder how important to be punctual in
class because of not having any consequences. Students that do not take ownership over their
responsibilities will be late to school in the morning for first period.
When students come to class late, it can disturb the discussion within the class, distract
other students, and generally destroy class morale. Furthermore, lateness can spread throughout

the class. Because of this issue, there are possible reasons students arrive to class late.
Apparently, this was why Chujor (2014) emphasized that school administrators, teachers,
parents, and others have shown concern about it. Chujor said that a lot of measures have been
adopted to control the occurrence such as giving punishment like being sanctioned.
Some students arrived at school after the bell has rung because of choices they’ve made.
Their lateness might be system of anxiety about school, caused by either academic or social
concerns. – (Dr. Kennet Shore)
According to Santillano (2010) stated that psychological theorists considered some
personality traits, including low self-esteem and anxiety as triggering factors of tardiness. She
also mentioned that while some theorists considered tardiness as an inborn quality since our
being early or late is partially biologically determined, which she also agreed, other experts also
believed that some people are chronically tardy for a reason.
Nakpodia and Dafiaghor (2011) also connect lateness or tardiness to a lot of factors or
causes. Going late to bed and waking up late next morning are the most common. The author
added social networking and film-watching late at night can cause tardiness. The student may
forget that he/she needs to be in school the next day.
As cited by Pimentel and Quijada (2011), he said that lack of sleep causes neural
malfunctions and further affects a person’s behaviour. In the study’s case, it is a
student’spunctuality that is affected. Sometimes, it is not completely the students’ fault why they
keep on being late in coming to class or school. Maybe students need to spend more time
reflecting/practicing. It is best to start on homework as soon as students have the time to, so that
they have time to sleep. It is important for students to be prepared for daily tasks, such as
tardiness. In Pritzker College Prep, there are demerits when tardy, but in real world when people
are tardy, they miss/risk really important life opportunities. So students should try their best and
get into good habits now that students are young and slowly beginning to mature.

II. Methodology

Research Design

The study was done using the qualitative research which is describing, interpreting,
contextualizing, and gaining in-depth insight into specific concepts or phenomena. In conducting
survey, the researchers used convenience sampling which collects data from people or other
relevant elements to which they have most convenient access.

Research Instruments

In order to know the reasons about why students come to school late is that we, the
researcher conducted a survey among 200 students within the school so that we will know the
reasons about it.

Data Gathering Procedure

To gather our data, first thing to do is to give the survey questions to the students. After
that, we gather those same responses to the said survey questions so that we can know how many
students that has same response and with that we can make graph about it.

III. Results And Discussion

Among 200 students who conducted survey, these are the following answers as to why
students come to school late:

 Playing games- students play games at night because they are bored and have nothing to
do.
 Studying- the reason why students study at night because they want high grades and they
want to excel in their academic life. They study at night because they want a good and
better future.

 Laziness- some students are lazy because they often procrastinate. Students become lazy
because of their phones.
 Watching T.V- some students watch T.V at night because they are entertained and they
want to see their favorite artist like Cardo Dalisay and many more.
 Over sleep- some students oversleep because they are tired of the things they do at night..
 Insomnia- students experience insomnia due to anxiety, stress and depression.
 Household chores- some students do their household chores at night because they don’t
have time to do it in the morning.

Analysis

There are 2 majors reasons on why students come to school late that students response to
it and each reason differ from each other such as not taking responsibility for themselves and
students who doesn’t ponder how important to be punctual in class because of not having any
consequences. Another reason is low self-esteem and anxiety as triggering factor of tardiness.
One of the most common reasons is going late to bed and waking up late the next day.

Coming to school late by students could be a result in many factors. Many factors, thus
teacher and school administrators ought to work hard with the view of reducing the problem.
Reduction of students late coming may serve as helpful for students in their future career. And
we researchers wants to solve their issue.
The factors why students woke up late because of the following (1) playing games (2)
studying (3) laziness (4) watching televisions (5) over sleep (6) insomnia and (7) household
chores. And also the factors why students come to school late because of their transportation the
following are (1) far away from home (2) The tricycle driver has no change (3) The tricycle
driver priorities other passenger and also (4) There is no tricycle that pass by their house.

IV. Conclusions

So, among 200 students within the school who conducted survey, the majority of them say
that they come to school late because they woke up late. There are many factors on why they
woke up late, this factors includes playing games, studying, laziness, watching television, over
sleep, insomnia, and household chores.
Therefore, in order for us to lessen the number of students coming to school late, we
would like to have a room to room orientation so that the students would be aware about the
possible effects if they continue to come to school late.
