Narrator: It is the night before CNY and grandfather is waiting eagerly for the return for his
eldest son and his family for the reunion dinner. It has been 3 years since his son and his
family has joined himself for the celebration of CNY and this year his son had promised him
a celebration together. Grandfather had prepared all off his son’s favourite dishes.
** Grandfather places food on the table, arranging everything to look perfect.
Aunt: Papa, where is brother? It’s late and he has nowhere to be seen.
Grandfather: *checks his watch. Oh yah, you’re right. I’m sure he is on his way, probably
caught up with the traffic. Let me give him a ring.
** Calls son
Grandfather: Ah boy, are you reaching? It’s late and the food is getting cold.
Father: Aiya pa, I won’t be able to make it to the dinner tonight. I’m still at work. Didn’t I
tell you I won’t be able to make it? I’ll be there in the morning okay. Bye bye bye, got work.
I’ve got to go.
** Grandfather shakes head, looking utterly disappointed. Aunt looks worried.
Grandfather: Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow. Don’t forget to have your dinner.
** Turns and faces the daughter, looking disappointed.
Grandfather: Looks like your brother won’t be joining us today, he’s busy at work. He said
he is busy with work.
Aunt: It’s okay papa, I’m sure he will be here tomorrow. Come, let’s eat. The food will be
cold.
** Aunt calls her daughter to join in for the reunion dinner and continues to chat with
her father in hopes of cheering him up.
** CNY song plays in the background.
Mother: This is why it is important for all of us to be together during the day. Not only that,
there are a few other things that are important. Do you know why everything is red during
CNY?
** Kids shakes their head.
Aunt: Red, corresponding with fire, symbolizes good fortune and joy. Red is found
everywhere during Chinese New Year and other holidays and family gatherings. A red
envelope is a monetary gift which is given in Chinese society during holiday or special
occasions. The red color of the packet symbolizes good luck.
Mother : Grandfather isn’t getting any joy by being mad at you guys, please try to understand
where he’s coming form.
Son1: Sorry ma, we understand that family time is important. We’ll be more cooperative.
Narrator: Father managed to convince grandfather to come back into the house and join
them for lunch.
Son2: We’re sorry grandfather, we didn’t realize how important this was to you. We
should’ve been aware of the traditions and educated ourselves.
Son1: We’re sorry grandfather.
Narrator: After apologizing profusely, a smile crept on grandfather’s face.
Grandfather: *smiles. It’s okay, all is good now. Let’s eat.
Narrator: And so everyone ate their lunch harmoniously and CNY started to feel a whole lot
better.
