Engineering Physics Assignment # 3

Electric Potential

Q-1. A proton is released from rest in a uniform electric field that has a
magnitude of 8.0x104 V/m. The proton undergoes a displacement of 0.50 m in
the direction of E.
(A) Find the change in electric potential between points A and B.
(B) Find the change in potential energy of the proton–field system for this
displacement.
(C) Find the speed of the proton after completing the 0.50 m displacement in
the electric field.

Q-2. An electric dipole consists of two charges of equal magnitude and opposite
sign separated by a distance 2a, as shown in Figure. The dipole is along the x
axis and is centered at the origin.
(A) Calculate the electric potential at point P.
(B) Calculate V and Ex at a point far from the dipole.
(C) Calculate V and Ex if point P is located anywhere
between the two charges.

Q-3. Find an expression for the electric potential and Electric field at a point
P located on the perpendicular central axis of a uniformly charged ring of
radius “a” and total charge Q?
Q-4. A rod of length located along the x axis has a total charge Q and a uniform
linear charge density λ=Q/L Find the electric potential at a point P located on the
y axis a distance “a” from the origin as shown in figure.

Q-5. An electron moving parallel to the x axis has an initial speed of 3x106m/s at
the origin. Its speed is reduced to 1.40x105 m/s at the point X=2.00 cm.
Calculate the potential difference between the origin and that point. Which point
is at the higher potential?

Capacitors and Capacitances

Q-6. Two metal objects have net charges of +70 pC and -70 pC, which result in
a 20V potential difference between them. (a) What is capacitance of the system?
(b) If the charges are changed to +200 pC and -200 pC, What does capacitance
become? (c) What does the potential difference become?

Q-7. Four capacitors are connected as shown in Figure. (a) Find the equivalent
capacitance between points a and b. (b) Calculate the charge on each capacitor
if ΔVab=15.0 V.
Q-8. Consider the circuit shown in Figure, where C1 =6.00 μF, C2 =3.00 μF and
ΔV=20V, and Capacitor C1 is first charged by the closing of switch S1 . Switch
S1 is then opened, and the charged capacitor is connected to the uncharged
capacitor by the closing of S2 . Calculate the initial charge acquired by C1 and
the final charge on each.

Q-9. Find out expressions for capacitances of cylindrical and spherical shaped
capacitors.?

Q-10.a. How much energy is stored in one cubic meter of air due to the electric
field of magnitude 150 V/m.

b. What capacitance is required to store an energy of 10kw.h at a potential

difference of 1000 V ?
