Assignment 02

The document contains a 10 question end-semester exam on probability and statistics covering topics such as binomial and normal distributions, probabilities of random variables, and standard deviations. Questions involve calculating probabilities of events related to virus infection rates, prize winnings, test question guessing, coin flipping, job completion times, order receipt methods, fish catching, density curves, and customer arrival rates at a restaurant. The exam is for a Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics and Control Engineering program at the University of Engineering and Technology in Faisalabad, Pakistan.

Probability and Statistics
End-Semester Exam (Spring–2020)
Date: 14-07-2020
Submission Date: 18th July 2020 Total Marks: 20
Q1: Suppose that 80 percent of trees in a forest of 300 trees are infected with a virus, and we take an
5 trees at random to test for the virus.
What is the probability that exactly 2 of the 5trees have the virus?

Q2: Aja's favorite cereal is running a promotion that says 1-in-4 boxes of the cereal contain a prize.
Suppose that Aja is going to buy 5 boxes of this cereal, and let X represent the number of prizes she
wins in these boxes. Assume that these boxes represent a random sample, and assume that prizes are
independent between boxes.

What is the probability that she wins at most 1 prize in the 5 boxes?

Q3: Philip ran out of time while taking a multiple-choice test and plans to guess on the last 4 questions.
Each question has 5 possible choices, one of which is correct. Let X, equals the number of answers
Philip correctly guesses in the last 4 questions. Assume that the results of his guesses are
independent.

What is the probability that he answers fewer than 2 questions correctly in the
last 4 questions?

Q4: Cora is playing a game that involves flipping three coins at once.
Let the random variable H be the number of coins that land showing "heads". Here is the probability
distribution for H:
H=# of heads H, 0 1 2 3
P(H) 0.1250 0.3750 0.3750 0.1250
What is the probability that Cora flips no more than 1 head?

Q5: Sam and Taylor own and operate a car wash service. Sam cleans the interior of each car and Taylor
cleans the exterior. The time it takes Sam to finish the interior has a mean of 20 minutes with a
standard deviation of 6.4 minutes. The time it takes Taylor to finish the exterior has a mean
of 18 minutes with a standard deviation of 4.8 minutes. Both of their finishing times are
approximately normally distributed.

Suppose we select a car at random, and define the random variable D as the difference between
their finishing times. We can assume that their times are independent.
Find the probability that they finish within 10 minutes of each other. (Hint: Combine the
mean and Standard Deviation and then find the standard Normal Random variable)

Q6: Lilyana runs a cake decorating business, for which 10%, percent of her orders come over the
telephone. Let C be the number of cake orders Lilyana receives in a month until she first gets an
order over the telephone. Assume the method of placing each cake order is independent.

Find the probability that it takes fewer than 5 orders for Lilyana to get her first telephone
order of the month.

Q7: Jenna goes fishing every Saturday morning. She is only allowed to catch a maximum of 2 fish each
trip. The table below displays the probability distribution of X, the number of fish that Jenna
catches in a trip.

X=# of fish 0 1 2
P(X) 0.040 0.320 0.640.
Given that μX=1.6, find the standard deviation of the number of fish that Jenna catches

Q8: Consider the density curve below.

Find the probability that x is more than 3.

Q9: The distribution of SAT scores of all college-bound seniors taking the SAT in 2014 was
approximately normal with a mean of 1497 and standard deviation of 322. Let X represents the
score of a randomly selected tester from this group.

Find P(X>1800)

Q10: Suppose a fast food restaurant can expect two customers every 3 minutes, on average. What is the
probability that four or fewer patrons will enter the restaurant in a 9 minutes period?
