Solutions To Worksheet 1 - Network Diagrams (AON)

The document contains solutions to 6 questions regarding network diagrams and project scheduling. For each question, it provides the early start, early finish, late start, late finish, and slack times for activities. It identifies the critical path and project duration for each network diagram. Key details include activity types (e.g. burst, merge) and how slack time determines if a delay will impact the project completion date.

Solutions to Worksheet 1 – Network Diagrams (AON)

Question 1

1.1
1.2 The Early Start (ES) and Early Finish (EF) times for each activity on the network
diagram are tabulated below:

Activity ID ES EF
A 0 2
B 2 5
C 2 3
D 5 7
E 5 9
F 5 7
G 9 13
H 13 18
I 18 19

1.3 The Late Start (LS) and Late Finish (LF) times for each activity on the network
diagram are tabulated below:

Activity ID LS LF
A 0 2
B 2 5
C 10 11
D 7 9
E 5 9
F 11 13
G 9 13
H 13 18
I 18 19

1.4 The slack for each activity can be computed using wither one of the two equations:

Slack = LS - ES OR Slack = LF - EF

**** You can double-check yourself by using both equations, you will get the same
answer.
Refer to the network diagram for the slack times.

1.5 Critical path: A, B, E, G, H, I.

1.6 The project duration is 19 days. This is the EF time of the very last activity.
1.7 Since Activity E lies on the critical path and has zero slack time, a delay of one day
would mean a delay in the overall project completion.

1.8 Activity C does not lie on the critical path and has quite a lot of slack. This means
that a delay of one day would not have an impact on the total project
duration/completion time because of this available slack.

Question 2

2.1
2.2 Consult the diagram for the ES and EF times.

2.3 Consult the diagram for the LS and LF times.

2.4 Consult the diagram for the slack times.

2.5 Critical path: A, D, F, H.

2.6 The project duration is 42 days.

2.7 Activity E does not lie on the critical path and has quite a lot of slack. This means
that a delay of one day would not have an impact on the total project
duration/completion time because of this available slack.

2.8 Since Activity C does not lie on the critical path and has quite a lot of slack. This
means that a delay of one day would not have an impact on the total project
duration/completion time because of this available slack.

Question 3

Activity C is a burst activity.

Activity G is a merge activity.
Question 4

Activity ID ES EF LS LF Slack
A 0 2 0 2 0
B 2 7 2 7 0
C 2 5 4 7 2
D 7 11 7 11 0
E 11 14 11 14 0

Critical path: A, B, D, E.
The project will take 14 days to complete.
Question 5
Activity ID ES EF LS LF Slack
A 0 5 0 5 0
B 5 25 15 35 10
C 5 35 5 35 0
D 5 10 30 35 25
E 35 115 35 115 0
F 115 130 130 145 15
G 115 145 115 145 0
H 115 140 120 145 5
I 115 135 125 145 10
J 145 155 145 155 0

The critical path for this network diagram lies on activities: A, C, E, G, J.

Question 6

6.1

Activity ID ES EF LS LF Slack
A 0 5 0 5 0
B 5 20 5 20 0
C 20 45 20 45 0
D 20 35 30 45 10
E 20 50 25 55 5
F 45 55 45 55 0
G 55 65 55 65 0
H 65 70 65 70 0
I 70 75 70 75 0

6.2 Consult the table above for the slack times for each activity.

6.3 Critical path: A, B, C, F, G, H, I.

6.4 Project duration is 75 days.
