(EE-813) Computer Modeling of Electrical Power Systems: 1.1. Components

This document discusses computer modeling of electrical power systems to help address questions about supplying load, generator requirements, optimal component placement, and security precautions before building new power systems. It describes modeling the key components of transformers, conductors, loads, and generators, noting different types like single/three phase items. Books on distribution system modeling and load flow analysis are recommended for reference, with a clarification that the modeling discussed uses mathematics, not Simulink simulations.

(EE-813) Computer Modeling of Electrical Power Systems

Fig. 1. A single line diagram of a power system

Before building a new power system, we face a number of question:

1. How much load should be supplied using the newly constructed power sytem?
2. How many generators are required to supply that load?
3. What are the optimal locations for installing transformers, generators and switches in the power system?
4. What precautions should be taken to securely supply the loads?

All the above questions can be addressed only if the power systems are modelled adequately.
