Let’s Review!
The precolonial literature includes all literature produced before the Spanish colonization like
chants, proverbs, songs, and folk narratives. These were all passed down from generation to
generation by word of mouth.
Philippine folk narratives are varied and distinct. They depict the people’s livelihood, customs,
and traditions.
There are three (3) main Forms of Literature during this era namely:
A. Oral Literature

figuratively and as metaphors, and are in the form of questions

drinking sessions.

*Songs of Death- are lamentations that contain the roll of good deeds that the
dead has usually done to immortalize his or her good image.
*Religious Songs- are songs or chants that are usually given during exorcisms and
thanksgiving during good harvest.
*Komintang-song of the war
C. Folk Tales- This is a characteristically anonymous, timeless, and placeless tale circulated
orally among a people.
*Myths- This is told to explain a belief, a practice, or a natural phenomenon.
