Review Packet #2 – Polynomials

1. The expression ax 3 − 8x 2 − cx + 9 is 4x 2 + x + 1 greater than −2x 3 + bx 2 − d − 2x . Find the
values of a, b, c and d.

2. Write an expression that is not a polynomial. Explain why it is not.

3. Polynomial functions are continuous. Discuss what “continuous” means in terms of the
domain of the functions and the characteristics of their graphs.

d. The end behavior.

e. Sketch the graph. -8

f. The intervals where the function is increasing and decreasing.

5. A rectangular parking lot has a length that is 3 yards greater than the width. The area of
parking lot is 180 square yards. Find the length and the width.

6. What is the Rational Root Theorem? Explain why you know that the function
f ( x ) = x 4 + 6 x + 2 has no rational roots.

7. Find all the roots of f ( x) = 2 x 4 − x3 − 7 x 2 + x + 2 by first listing all the possible rational
roots, finding one that works, and using that root in synthetic division.

8. Suppose a polynomial function has a degree of 5, P(0) = 20 , the graph bounces at 5, and
1
zeros: − , 5, 3 − 4i . Write the equation of the polynomial (you may leave it in factored
2
form). Sketch a graph of the polynomial.

9. Sketch each of the following, labeling all x and y intercepts:

a. y = −( x + 2)2 ( x − 3)2 c. y = x − 7x + 10
