I would first like to explain what an operating system is… An operating system (OS) is simply
the program that manages all other application programs on a computer.
But, is there a difference between the operating systems of smartphones and computers?
There is no difference, both smartphones and computers use the operating system equally.
Palm OS was created at the same time as the Symbian OS but each one was presented in
different years, the Palm OS and the first version of the Symbian OS were used purely for
PDAs, but it was in 2000 that the Symbian OS was used on a mobile phone , the Ericsson R380
and in 2001 Palm OS was used for a smartphone.
Palm OS (also known as Garnet OS) is a discontinued mobile operating system initially
developed by Palm, Inc., for personal digital assistants (PDAs) in 1996. Palm OS was designed
for ease of use with a touchscreen-based graphical user interface. It is provided with a suite of
basic applications for personal information management. Later versions of the OS have been
extended to support smartphones. Several other licensees have manufactured devices
powered by Palm OS.
Symbian OS
Symbian is a discontinued mobile operating system (OS) and computing platform designed for
smartphones. Symbian was originally developed as a closed-source OS for PDAs in 1998 by the
Symbian Ltd. consortium. Symbian OS is a descendant of Psion's EPOC, and was released
exclusively on ARM processors, although an unreleased x86 port existed. Symbian was used by
many major mobile phone brands, like Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and above all by
Nokia.
Pocket PC
Pocket PC 2000, originally codenamed "Rapier", was released on April 19, 2000, and was based
on Windows CE 3.0. It was the debut of what was later dubbed the Windows Mobile operating
system, and meant to be a successor to the operating system aboard Palm-Size PCs
