Alternative Online Platform for Blended Learning

I. Online Platforms and Alternative Learning Management System (LMS) for Blended
Learning (Open Source)

6 Reasons Why Google Classroom is a Great Tool for Teachers

 Exposure to an Online Learning Platform - Today, many colleges require students to take at
least one online class during the course of their degree work. In fact, if you get a master’s degree
in education, some of your coursework could be online. Unfortunately, many students have never
had any experience with online education. That is why you really want to make sure to give your
students as much exposure to it as possible at a young age. Google Classroom is an easy way to
help students with this transition because it is super user-friendly, making it a great intro to
technology.
 Easy Access to Materials - Because everything is posted online, Google Classroom gives
students access to materials no matter where they are. Gone are the days of lost rubrics or
worksheets. Students who are absent can easily access classroom materials from home if
necessary–this can really help save both you and your students a lot of stress in the long run.
 Differentiation - Because you can set up many different classrooms, Google Classroom is a
great tool for differentiation. If you’re working on a concept in class and have groups working at
two different levels, simply create two different classes for that unit. That way you can better reach
out to those who are struggling with their own kind of work without making them feel bad. This can
help you give out assignments on a more individual basis and really reach out to certain students
as well. You can even split everyone into groups that you think they will be able to work the best
in. Google Classroom is a great, flexible way to ensure that every student gets just what they
need, and you can easily delete and recreate classes as you see fit.
 Less Paper - When used to run an entire class, Google Classroom can virtually get rid of paper
consumption. As long as students have access to the internet, all classwork can be handled
online. This means no copies and ultimately less money for your district.

 No Lost Work - Students can’t lose work if they don’t physically have it in their presence. Since
they are usually working in Google Drive, everything saves automatically and excuses dwindle.
With a few short lessons concerning how to properly use these online tools, students can
experience more success getting organized.
 Engagement - It’s been proven time and time again that students are engaged by technology.
Google Classroom can help students become and stay engaged in the learning process. If you
have students answer questions in Classroom, for example, other students can comment on these
answers and deepen thought for both students.
 Overall, using Google Classroom is definitely worthwhile. It can save you a lot of time and energy,
and can help you to better prepare your students for the future.

 Edmodo is a free Facebook- like learning

management system (LMS) that teachers can use to
manage online instruction. Teachers can create an
account, classes, and their first assignment or quiz
within minutes and can invite students and parents to
join them via class code, email, or handout. Once students join, they can see content, manage
deadlines, receive and submit assignments, and interact with the teacher and other classmates by
participating in activities and writing posts that include embedded files, links, and media. Teachers
can see all posts and can moderate content or put class members on read-only mode. Users can
share documents, links, video, and images using the drag-and-drop feature, integrating files from
Google and Microsoft accounts. Teachers can also use the Discover page to find apps, games,
and student-focused news to add to their assignments. Plus, the Reports feature allows teachers
to track assignment completion and grades.
 Featured collections, such as the Distance Learning Collection, can be great time-savers for
teachers who want to up their level of virtual instruction without reinventing the wheel. Plus,
there’s a robust community of Edmodo users who are eager to share ideas with one another
through multiple discussion forums and groups, enhancing the site's educational quality and
professional development (PD) opportunities.

Schoology is a website and an app that you and your students can utilize to share information,
resources, and files. It is a learning management system designed to provide a digital medium to
enhance classroom interactions and support webpage and content creation as well as collaboration.

Schoology is free to use, too! Well, its basic package—which is amazing in itself—is free, and you
can upgrade as needed. It is possible for your school to host accounts for teachers as well. In this
way, the school itself would provide communications and materials to students and teachers alike.

Take Advantage of These Features

Schoology includes plenty of useful features like a gradebook, attendance tracking, analytics, badges,
calendar, event creation, private messages, groups, and profile personalization. But more than this
list, there are a handful of others that you can greatly benefit from using:

 Create classes and folders: Teachers can create specific courses that students can join. Within
those courses, you can then create folders and post materials for students to access. If you’re
new to Schoology, this is a great first step—uploading is simple and enhances how you distribute
materials to your class.

 Have discussions: You and your students can have online conversations (as a requirement or
purely casual) and post questions to one another through Schoology’s discussion board. Similar to
other platforms, you’re also able to include attachments and links in each post.

 Post and Receive Assignments: Posting assignments to Schoology is a breeze—you can

include its title, the details and requirements, attachments, and due date on a calendar. You can
even receive completed work via Schoology too! Grading and annotating any student project is
also supported, making Schoology a big step towards going paperless.

 Create Requirements and Steps: Let’s say you have several steps you want students to go
through. In Schoology you can organize each step and create restrictions so that students cannot
go onto step two until they complete step one (or achieve a specific score), and so on.

 Create Quizzes: You can create assessments inside of Schoology itself. If you have a multiple

choice quiz, Schoology will grade it for you and provide a score summary for your class. You can
have multiple choice, true and false, short answer, and matching questions.

 Seamless Integration: You can easily pull external resources, like Google Drive, into Schoology
to use, or you can push documents from Schoology to other tools, like TurnItIn.
