Great Power Race IIT Delhi: Complete Water Audit of The Campus

The IIT Delhi campus conducted a water audit over two years to analyze monthly water consumption. They found consumption increased each month and was highest in hostels, especially for washing and cleaning. Hostel Satpura consumed the most due to its large size and proximity to water sources. The audit identified hostels and washrooms as areas with potential for large consumption reductions through awareness campaigns and more efficient fixtures. It also revealed imbalances in water distribution between areas on campus.

The Audit

We conducted an audit of how much water is consumed in the institute monthly over a period
of 2 years. We also found out how this water is used throughout the institute.

FINDINGS

This table displays the amount of consumed by the entire institute in a month over the past 2
years.

However this water is not distributed evenly throughout the area. Instead the consumption is
as follows:

Source wise percentage of total non drinking water supplied to IIT

 As shown a majority of the water consumed was in the hostels. Most of these were
due to activities such as washing and cleaning. Although a significant proportion of
the consumption happened in the mess due to the students using the taps there for
washing their hands. Hence to decrease the water consumption in hostels we tried
several measures including putting up posters to increase awareness and installing
foot operated taps.

Chart showing the Supply to various hostels

 Among the hostels, some such as Satpura consumed a much greater share . This was
due to their large size in relation to others but also due to their location close to the
tube wells and supply area as they were able to obtain a greater share of the supply.

Conclusion
We were able to recognize that a large percentage of the water used in our campus was in the
hostels for purposes such as the washrooms and the kitchens. This enabled us to recognize
those areas where there was great potential for reduction of water consumption such as in the
hostels and in the washroom throughout the campus compared to some other areas where not
much could be done. Therefore with the help of this audit we were able to focus our attention
on reducing water consumption in various ways.

Also it showed to us the imbalance of the water supply and hence where the water was
getting wasted. Therefore the audit enabled us to tackle this problem of wastage of water.
