Bio Quiz#1 Term 4 Summary : The Mouth

The alimentary canal runs from the mouth to anus and includes the stomach and pancreas. In the mouth, saliva containing the enzyme amylase digests starch. The esophagus transports food to the stomach using peristalsis. The stomach churns food into chyme using gastric juices before entering the small intestine, where pancreatic juices aid digestion and the liver produces bile. The large intestine absorbs water before egestion.

Bio quiz#1 term 4 summary 

 An Alimentary canal is a long tube which runs from the mouth

to the anus
 It’s a part of the digestive system which includes the stomach
and pancreas
The mouth
 To help food slide easily to the canal, it is lubricated with
mucus which is made goblet cells which occur in the
Alimentary canal
 Mixes food with saliva and forms it to a bolus
 Saliva is made of salivary glands which is made of water, mucus
and enzyme amylase.
 Amylase digests startch in the food to sugar maltose
throat
 The two pipes in ur mouth are trachea ( air to the lungs) & the
oesophagos( behind it)
 When swallowing, a piece of cartilage covers the trachea
entrance called epiglottis
 Circular muscles circular contract, making the lumen smaller n
squeeze food forward. They also relax so the food can pass
through the other end.
 The wall contains muscles which contracts n relax to help move
along food. This movement is called peristalis
 It’s necessary to keep food in the alimentary canal for a while
before moving on. Special muscles close their exit to getawae.
These muscles are called sphincter muscles
stomach
 Has strong muscular walls
 To churn the food n mix it with enzymes n mucus is called
chyme
 After 1 or 2h the sphincter opens n lets the chyme to the
duodenum
Small intestine
 5m long
 near to stomach; duodenum. Far; ileum

 pancreatic juice
 helps neutralize the acidic mixture from the stomach
 helps digest fats by making them small so it’s easier for lipase
in the pancreatic juice to digest it to fatty acids n glycerol
(estyemulsification)
 does yellowish bile pigments caused by the liver when
breaking down old red blood cells
 contain haemoglobin

 each villius is 1mm

 caecum and appendix have no function
 in the colon, water and salt are absorbed
 process of pooping is called egestion
