• The Cabinet has cleared the Model Shops and Establishment Bill:-Allowing shops, malls,
cinema halls and restaurants to start 24x7 operations, It will have a tremendous effect on
the services sector which contributes more than half to the GDP of the Indian economy.
• India ranks low at 105th on human capital index. Finland tops.
Human capital index measures countries' ability to nurture, develop and deploy talent for
economic growth.
• According to recently released BP Statistical Review of World Energy India has
surpassed Japan to become the world’s third-largest oil consumer. With demand of 4.1
million barrels a day (bpd), India is the third-largest consumer behind the United States
(19.39 million bpd) and China (11.96 million bpd).
• The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that Thailand has become the
first Asian country to eliminate mother-to-child HIV transmission.
• Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani jointly
inaugurated the Afghan-India Friendship Dam in Herat province in Western Afghanistan
The Afghan-India Friendship Dam was earlier known as Salma Dam.
• The Union Cabinet has approved merger of country’s largest lender State Bank of India
(SBI) and its associate banks in order to bring the state-owned entity on a par with global
lenders. 5 associate banks of SBI are: (i) State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, (ii) State
Bank of Hyderabad, (iii) State Bank of Mysore, (iv) State Bank of Patiala and (v) State
Bank of Travancore. Apart from these 5 associate banks, the Bharatiya Mahila Bank
(BMM) will also be merged with the SBI.
• Private power producer Tata Power Co. Ltd has agreed to acquire renewable energy
company Welspun Renewables Energy Pvt. Ltd.
• The company which has signed an agreement to acquire business oriented social
networking service LinkedIn for $26.2 billion: Microsoft
• Government clears recommendations of 7th pay commission

• Cabinet approves setting up of India Post Payments Bank
The Union Cabinet under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has
given its approval for setting up the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) as a Public
Limited Company under the Department of Posts, with 100% Government of India (GOI)
equity.
• India became the 35th full member of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). It
would be mutually beneficial in the furtherance of international non-proliferation
objectives.
• As per the recently released 2016 World Investment Report, India ranks 10th in FDI
(Foreign Direct Investment) inflows.
Top 10 Countries are: United States, Hong Kong, China, Ireland, Netherlands,
Switzerland, Singapore, Brazil, Canada and India.
• Union Government approves 100% FDI in Aviation, Defence and e-commerce sectors
• The Union Ministry of Power has launched ‘URJA’- Urban Jyoti Abhiyaan Mobile

• Ken Miyauchi has been appointed as the President and Chief Operating Officer (COO)
of the Japanese conglomerate Softbank Group. He will succeed Nikesh Arora who had
stepped down from his position after the Chairman and CEO of Group Masayoshi Son
wanted to remain at the helm longer than first planned.
• The Union Government has appointed NS Vishwanathan as deputy governor of the
Reserve Bank of India (RBI). His appointment was approved by the Appointments
Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) presided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New
Delhi. NS Vishwanathan will shall have term will be for three years and will succeed
Harun R Khan, who will superannuates on July 7, 2016 on turning 62.
Present Deputy Governors of RBI are the other being R Gandhi, S S Mundra) and Urjit
Patel (an economist).
