KOREAN SENTENCE PATTERNS AND NUANCES
NOUN + 아니다
—
Let’s take a look at the Korean pattern Noun + 아니다. 아니다 is the negative counterpart of 이다 and it is what
we use when saying things like I am not a man or You are not a woman. In other words, it is the verb for
to be not someone/something. Unlike 이다, it is not attached to the noun. In fact, the noun takes the
subject markers 이 or 가 depending on the final sound, but they are pretty much dropped in conversations. You
can conjugate it into the following: 아닙니다 (formal), 아니에요 (polite), and 아니야 (casual). In past tense, you
can conjugate it into 아니었습니다 (formal), 아니었어요 (polite), and 아니었어 (casual).
저는 한국 사람이 아닙니다.
I am not Korean.
(present-formal)
제 책임이 아니에요.
That is not my responsibility.
(present-polite)
