Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilok started Lord Ganesha Puja .

Tilak had an aim to bring Indian people out of their homes and unite
them . Due to people’s reverence to Lord Ganesha masses came out
to celebrate this festival. These brought feeling of unity and
fearlessness among them . Combined invocation of Lord Ganesha
repelled all obstacles.

If one has to achieve the target, get success, then one has to
pray to the Lord. Lord has to be made the central point and
concentration on him has to be done. One has to become a part of
the Lord himself. After this one only has to do his duty and rest
should be left to the almighty. Automatically all jobs shall get
accomplished. All small jobs shall become great . All small
accomplishments shall become big victories. All un success will
converted to only successes. Every new corner will give a new ray of
hope and light . All works will just happen. Unsought in the life shall
be delivered. After this not much has to be thought neither anything
has to be done. Whatever will happen shall be left on him. Winner is

Introduction
Human beings are the supreme among all the creatures on the
planet Earth. Though creatures that are more powerful than human
are also present on Earth, but they have easily conquered them.
Human mind is very curious to know the deep lying secrets of
nature. Human mind is the most developed and advanced compared
to any other creature on this planet. Due to this human are emotional
and they posses many emotions like happiness, sorrow etc. Humans
are curious to unravel the secrets of the nature. All the inventions and
discoveries on this planet became possible due to this curiosity.

Human is attached towards sky since the stone age. Though

human were not knowledge during that time, but with time they have
learnt and developed their experience and made new discoveries.
Human developed many faculties like Art, Science, Mathematics ,
Language ,etc. Thus human obtained knowledge of many such fields.
Astrology is also a subject under these.

Sky is analyzed by various stars, plants and constellations and their

positions, changes in them with time, changes in Seasons, etc. These
information is the basic starting steps of Astrology. Although this art is
so old that it’s exact time of birth cannot be predicted. Human civiliza-
tion and knowledge of Astrology developed almost simultaneously.

What is Astrology ?

Astrology can be defined by given Sanskrit Shloka.

T;ksfr"kka lw;kZfn xzgk.kka cks/kda 'kkL=e~

The above shlokas means that subject that studies planets and
constellations and facts related to them is Astrology. Earth and other
planets constantly revolve round the Sun. Sun and other star’s rays
fall on planet Earth. Their effect is clearly visible in human life. This
effect is studies under Astrology.

By minute obser-vation and study of planets every individual’s

good of bad and incidents in life can be studied. Now Astrology has
become a complete subject under which Astronomy, Mathematical
formulae and predictions are studied. Thus Astrology is a Science
that is based on scientific calculations and is based on development,
study and predictions of human life.

Karma

Soul is described in Shrimad Bhagwat Gita. It says that soul is

everlasting, it never dies. As we change our clothes when they get
old, similarly soul changes body when it gets old and weak. These
phenomenon occur from start to the end of this nature. Human
performs deeds in each birth. Vedas treat these deeds as very
important aspect. With a new birth the body of the soul is left behind
but the deeds flow with the soul. All deeds done by humans affects
their present and future. Birth chart or horoscope is made on the
basis of planetary position, yoga ( combination), tithi, constellations
etc. at the time of birth. This horoscope tells the direction and life
path of that individual. An individual’s behavior, action, good or bad,
etc. can be known. Horoscope also tells the malefic position and
aspects of life. Cam a horoscope which is made on the basis of
place, time and date of birth of an individual can give all the incidents
of that individual? There are few auspicious and few in auspicious
position due to this phenomenon.

A person who is being born or takes birth, has to do deeds in

this life, but his horoscope already suggests the life path of this hu-
man. What can be the reason for this ? Indian philosophy answers
this question. Soul is everlasting as per Indian philosophy. An
{6}
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

individual’s body dies but the soul is always alive. This soul re-
transform from one body to another. Soul does not take anything
with it but the person’s deeds that he did goes with the soul. Thus,
an individual has to suffer good or bad deeds that he has done dur-
ing his life. Person who has done good deeds in present life will
surely take birth in a auspicious form, auspicious family and lineage,
auspicious combinations, etc. While people who performed evil deeds
in the present lifetime has to suffer by getting birth in an in-auspi-
cious form, in proper place, malefic combinations etc
These deeds( Karma ) can be divided into three parts :-

Karma ( deZ )

Sanchita Prarabhda Kriyamaana

lafpr deZ izkjC/k deZ fØ;ek.k de

Sanchita Karma :-
Sanchita is a hindi word which means deposit. All deeds
performed by human gets deposited and is called as Sanchita Karma.
These deposits have auspicious or inauspicious results based on the
karma. Out of this many results one gets in the present lifetime itself.

{7}
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

Prarabhda Karma :-
All deeds of previous birth makes or destroys luck of a human.
It is called as Prarabhda karma.
Two people gets birth in the same city, same date and same
time, still their praradhda is different. If one of them has taken birth in
a Royal family then he has got all the comforts and luxuries of life at
the time of birth itself and will continue to get them in future also.
Similarly if the other person gets birth in an lower strata of society
then his staring point itself is wrong. Inauspicious environment and
bad company shall never progress by self-effort and wisdom. Since
both the horoscope shall be same due to their similarity in time, place
and date of birth, still their praradhda is different. Auspicious and
inauspicious incidents shall occur in both of their lifetime but their
effect on them will every accordingly.

Kriyamaana Karma :-
All deeds performed in present lifetime are called as Kriyamaana
karma. All deeds done in present make up the Sanchita karma. Out
of these some results are obtained instantly. Some of these constantly
add up to Sanchita karma that result in Prarabhda karma.
Understanding of this principle is very helpful in Astrology.
Suppose a person’s major previous deeds were evil so the person is
suffering with obstacles in this lifetime. But if he does some penance
{8}
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

of his previous deeds during this time of obstacle, then he can get
peace and relief to some extent. His prarabhda karma cannot be
dissolved but it’s effect can be reduced to some extent.

INTRODUCTION TO VEDAS

Vedas, the Aryan scriptures are regarded as the oldest literary

works of human civilization. Vedas are no ordinary books but a vast
stream of knowledge and light. In India, they are not considered as
mere religious works but an epitome of philosophy of life. Vedas are
not merely a collection of volumes on the principles of rites and
rituals. The scholars in the interest of the entire mankind propagated
the vast knowledge incorporated in the Vedas. The divine knowledge
existed ever since this cosmic creation came into being and the ancient
sages acquired it from God Almighty. This knowledge was later
compiled into the Vedas. Thus, the Vedas are not original writings
but a manifestation of divine knowledge. Knowledge of the Vedas is
total, whole, eternal and perpetual, free from the bounds of Time.
These compositions possess comprehensive knowledge from every
field of life like medicine, surgery, weaponry , fine arts, architecture ,
Astrology and various other topics including proprieties and
improprieties related to a msn’s daily life have been elaborately
discussed in the Vedas. There has been a traditional line of scholarly
{9}
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

Brahmins engaged in study of Vedas were called ‘ Vedagya’ or

one who is a scholar of the Vedas. Vedic scholars used their knowledge
towards the benefit and welfare of mankind . There are four Vedas in
all , namely The Rigvedaa, The Yajurveda, The Samaveda and The
Atharva Veda. There is also a supplement each to the four Vedas
called the Ayurveda, The Dhanurveda, The Gandharva Veda and the
Sthapatya Veda respectively. Vedas have six sub-parts as Shiksha
(Education ) , Kalpa ( a sacred performance , part of Vedic treatment
of rituals ) , Vyakarana (Grammar), Nirukta (an exposition of Vedas),
Chhanda( Hymns) and Jyotisha (Astorlogy). The various other
religious books of knowledge are called Puranas. Every Purana
contains a detailed knowledge about one particular subject. The
Puranas are also known as the Pancham Veda ( Fifth Veda).

1. RIGVEDA
Rigveda, is regarded as the oldest among the four Vedas. The
initial reference to Astrology is found in the Rigveda. Rigveda is a
collection of well composed verses termed as Shlokas. These Shlokas
are about 4000 years old. Shlokas (a sanskrit couplet) in Rigveda are
actually ‘Mantras’, the Hymns used for the purpose of addressing
and invoking God. Every Mantra is in the form of a rhythmic verse,
Vedic creations are in the Vedic Sanskrit language. Vedic Sanskrit is
no ordinary script. It clearly specifies the various phonetic signs, and
{ 10 }

the intensity pitch and the tone to be followed for each word while
reciting the mantras. The mantras recited in this manner are effectively
synchronized with the proper respiratory drill. This enables controlled
and even breathing during into different parts called ‘Mandals’. Every
mandala contains ‘Suktas’, the special mantras used to invoke a
specific divine power called Diety. A particular sage or scholar creates
every Sukta. A Sukta is incorporated in a rhythmic metre called
Chhanda, which also works as a cover or veil for the Sukta. Reciting
these Suktas only in the prescribed manner removes this cover and
makes one capable of a contact with the invoked Deity. These Suktas
are popularly known as ‘Richas’ . Hindu sages namely Agastya,
Gautama, Kashyap and Angiras are the main composers of the
Rigveda. Mantras in the Rigveda are mainly addressed to Gods-
Agni , Aditi, Aditya , Indra ,Usha , Soma , Rudra , Pusha , Varuna ,
Vaayu etc.

Every Veda has a sub-text or supplement called Upreda or sub-

veda. Ayurveda is the Upveda or Rigveda. Lord Dhanwantari is the
creator of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a comprehensive medical literature
containing detailed descriptions of various medicinal herbs and plants.
The quantity and dosage of medicine and the regimen to be followed
for a particular disease is also explained elaborately. In fact, Ayurveda
is not only a remedial science but also emphasizes on a healthy life

style. Therefore, ideal diet for different season are also discussed in
detail in Ayurveda. We find a mention of Surgery also in the earlier
volumes of Ayurveda. Practitioners of Ayurveda are called Vaidyas.
Ayurveda is now gaining popularity all over the world. This science
was preached by Lord Dhanwantri. Charaka , Sushruta, Vag Bhatta,
Shrangdhar are some prominent names among the scholars of
Ayurveda, who received this knowledge from Dhanwantari. Ashwini
Kumaras, the two sons of Lord Indra are the Vaidyas (Ayurvedic
Practitioner ) of Gods in the heaven. Main literary works dealing with
the practice of Ayuravedic science are Madhava Nidan, Bhava Prakash
Nighantu, Sushrut Samhita, Charak Samhita, Shrangdhar Samhita,
Vagbhatt Samhita etc.

Important facts of Astrology are given in Rigveda. It includes

effect of days, movement of Sun in Northern and Southern
hemispheres, and effect of birth of individual during various seasons.
Minute mathematical calculations are also included in this Veda.
Calculation of Indian system of months and tithes with their effects
is also a part of this Veda.

This Veda has thirty six parts that are related to Astrology. These
parts includes constellation , Vedic names of constellations, discovery
of constellation, prediction based on discovery etc.

2 . YAJURVEDA

Yajurveda contains detailed description of various practices of

performing Yagnas. Yagna is a religious ritual which mainly incorporates
sacred offerings to a particular God through a holy fire. Yajna, and
the entire process of performing rituals are described in the Mantras
of Yajurveda. There are different Yajnas for attaining different
objectives. Like, Ashwamedha Yajna is for becoming a universal
monarch, which finds a mention in the earlier scriptures. In the
Ramayana a reference of the Ashwamedha Yajna performed by Lord
Rama is given. Putra Kameshti Yajna aims at seeking gift of a son.
While there are Yajnas for specific objectives like victory in war or a
rainfall, there also are Yajnas for general welfare of mankind. The
specific act of making offerings through the holy fire is called Hawana.
Every Yajna , Howerer, Comprises of various other rituals apart from
Hawana. Every Yajna has its own specific method, rules and
regulations. The design of holy fire-place is also defined for different
Yajnas. The specific mantras given in the Yajurveda are chanted during
the Yajna. Yajna from the very beginning used to be performed by
Brahmins called Achaaryas. Prominent scholars who composed the
Mantras/ Richas of Yajurveda are Vashishtha , Atri, Vishwamitra,
Jamadagni, Yajnyavalkya, Dalavya . The Gods. prominently mentioned
in Yajurveda are Savita, Varuna , Vayu , Agni, Chandra, Aapa etc.

Dhanurveda the Upveda of Yajurveda has been authored by

Maharshi Bhrigu. Dhanurveda is the ancient Military Principles which
describes the ways of operating various arms and missiles- Astra
and Shastra. Common Arms and missiles were Khadga
(scimiter),Shoola(spear or a pike), Dhanusha Baana( Bow and Arrow),
Chakra(A wheel with pointed teeth),

Gada (Mace) and Pasha. Dhanurveda also deals with the art of
military leadership and an intricate process of deployment of troops
for trapping enemy columns. It discusses in detail the methods that a
General or a Commander should adopt in different circumstances.
Army with all these four components has been referred to as “
Chaturangini Sena” – the four columns Army having four parts.

Many important combinations of Astrology are found in

Yajurveda. Art of predictions developed in Yajurveda which later
become very important in Astrology. It had 13 new parts added after
Rigveda that contained important facts about predictions. Yajurveda
also includes detailed mathematical calculations.

3. SAMAVEDA

Samaveda, a portrayer of Aryan culture and life-style describes

the ways of reciting Mantras, Richas and Suktas. The method, lyrical
style and time of reciting a mantra are all precisely defined. These
fundamentals of mantras are to be strictly followed during recital for
obtaining optimum effect of the mantra. The time of recitation is also
specified for every mantra. There are different mantras for prayers at
dawn, mid-day and dusk. Prayers relating to these periods are
collectively termed as trikaal Sandhya. These prayers are strictly
performed by many Brahamins even today. These three course prayers
obviously have distinct significance and effects.
The Samaveda elaborately discusses the methods and drill of
all such rituals along with the ideal method for routine worship and
also for worship on special occasions and performing other daily
activities. The Brahmins, who perform these rites, and rituals are
called Purohits.

Gandharveda, the volume dealing with the art of dance and music
is the Upaveda or supplement of Samaveda. The Indian classical
styles of dance and music originated from Gandharvaveda. Like the
Mantras of Samaveda, there is a set time for various Raagas and
Raaginies (musical modes and melodies ).
{ 15 }

THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

Besides an elaborate information on Dance and Music, the

Gandharv Veda also describes the types and methods of playing
different musical instruments. Postures and expressions(Mudra and
Bhava) of various dances are also discussed in detail. Experts on
these techniques were called as Gandharvas and they commanded
more respect than the common citizen. Important facts about
Astrology are found in various parts or Samveda.

4. ATHARVAVEDA

Atharveda is a compilation of duties and responsibilities of man

and society. Fundamentals of the Atharvaveda deal with the
righteousness and duties of an individual and also defined morality
and immorality. Atharvaveda also discusses at large the social taboos
and scope and duties of both the King and his subjects. Rights of a
citizen and his duties towards his family, society and the country are
all systematically narrated. It also mentions the duties and obligations
of an individual towards his ancestors, his teachers and God, known
as Pitra Rina, Guru Rina and Dev Rina respectively. It also specifies
the significance of these obligations and describes the ways to perform
them. Atharvaveda also imparts knowledge related to vocations and
professions, like agriculture, trade, social work etc. Thus, Atharvaveda
is instruction on the art of living a purposeful life.
{ 16 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

Atharvaveda also has supplement or Upveda named Sthapatya

Veda. Sthapatya is derived from the word Sthapana, which means
establishing or placing. Sthapatya Veda contains knowledge about
the art and science of construction, twon-planning, designing of
temples, palaces, forts, tanks etc. It also deals in detail with paint-
ings, sculptures, designs of vehicles carriages, buildings and also
domestic furniture.

Astrology developed most in Atharvaveda. Astrology got it’s

best treatment in Atharvaveda. This Veda contains about One Hun-
dred Sixty Two parts on Astrology. Astrology developed as a full art
in this Veda. Vedic Astrology developed by the end of Vedic period.
By this time nomenclature of seven days and their names derivation
and relation with planets were established.

Mathematisc ( Astrology ) Prediction ( Astrology)

Principle Tantra Karana Hora Year Question Muhurata Samhita

Two Parts of Astrology :-

1. Mathematics ( Astronomy )
2. Prediction ( Astrology )

1.Mathematics:-

Mathematics is the part of Astrology that is solely based on

mathematical calculation and formulae. Mathematics is mainly used
for making horoscope, almanac, calculating positions of planets, their
movement , eclipse, etc. Under this, Mathematical formulas like
addition, subtraction , multiplication , division to complex geometric
and trigonometric formulae are used. These procedures help in
computing planets in solar system, their position , their movements,
their mutual distance from Earth , their movement style , etc.
{ 18 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

From the early ear of Astrology Mathematics was a formative part of

Astrology. Vedic seers and experts have done great work in this area.
Mathematics also developed rapidly with the development in Astrology.
In the history of India.

Mathematics developed into a full fledged part of Astrology

that it can be further sub-divided into following three parts.

Mathematics

Principles Tantra Karana

( a ) Principles
Principles depicts about scientific basis of Astrology. These
principles cover from beginning of universe to formation of planets.
Calculations based on these principle form the platform for Astrology.
In this method rules and formulae and defined from the formation of
solar system, planets to till date aspects. It includes all yugas that
come as passed ancient Indian texts. The calculations starts from
Satyuga and before that to present.

( b) Tantra :-
Tantra is a method in Mathematical Astrology where calculations
{ 19 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

are made from the present yuga i.e. Kalyuga. This method focuses
on calculations that are based from day starting from the beginning
of Yuga to a particular day.

( c ) Karana :-
Karana method is based on fixing a particular day as the basis
and calculating further computation in respect to that particular day.
In the present times, ancient method of calculation is replaced
by Astrological software. These software are very fast and accurate.
They can make a horoscope within no time. Thousands of horoscope
can be made using these software. Thus, hand-made horoscope are
now rarely made.

( 2 ) Prediction ( Astrology ) :-
Predictions are calculations based on effects of planets and
forecast based on these effects. All principles based on Mathematics
like planetary position, their mutual distances, their vision , etc. and
its effects on individual study and forecast of effect of planetary
position as the main function of predictive Astrology.
Predictive Astrology can be further sub- divided into five parts.

Prediction

Hora Year Question Muhurata Samhita

{ 20 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

( A ) Hora :-
Hora is mainly related with horoscope that is why it is also
called as text of individuals. Position of planets, their situation, their
movement, their rays etc. at the time of birth of birth of an individual
is described in hora. Using this information one can find effect of
horoscope on an individual. Horoscope is a very detailed and re-
search oriented subject. One can predict an individual’s life- span,
childhood, education, parents, family, brother-sister, spouse, chil-
dren, luck, profession, source of incomes, etc. An individual’s time
of marriage, luck rising age, wealth and similar information can also
be studied and predicted under hora.
One can predict about an individual using constellation at the
time of birth and based on horoscope and situation of planets in it

( B ) Yearly Prediction :-
Yearly prediction are done an a macro level. They are used for
prediction of events of a country, world and people as a whole. In
this method the date and time of starting of a year is calculated.
Based an these time, planetary positions , zodiac sign, power to
planets, etc. are formed. Effects of these positions on economy,
politics, major events, share market , bullion market , rains, etc. are
predicted. Effect on people under 12 zodiac sign is also predicted.
Similarly it is done for each months also. This method does not
{ 21 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

focus on an individual, rather this method has application for

country and its people. As per Astrology this method is a very im-
portant part of it.

( C ) Question Method :-
Question horoscope is a very interesting, invigorating yet very
effective technique of prediction . For this technique, one must have
knowledge of basic Astrology. In this method, horoscope is made of
current time. Based on this horoscope, current problem and solution
related to current problems can be predicted. By this method, cur-
rent situation and predictions based on that time can be instantly
predicted.

( D ) Muhurata :-
Calculation of time for performing jobs on auspicious time is
the art that comes under Muhurata part of Astrology. Astrology has
principles for doing work at an auspicious time. One can use this
time frame and be more successful in life. For success right job
should be performed at right place and right time. In this method
auspicious time of marriage, house construction , new house entry ,
renovation , borewell digging, starting education, starting business,
travel , etc. are calculated. All the sixteen rites as per Indian religion
from birth to death are also done at particular time based on Muhurata.
{ 22 }

It also includes time of sowing of seeds, tree plantation, annual gro-

cery stocking, purchase of cow, purchase of plot or flat, borrowing
or lending money , appealing in court, etc.

( E ) Samhita :-
Samhita is an important part of Astrology. Predictions based on
planetary situations and performing religious rituals based on that is
included in Samhita.

Major points that are included under this aspects are :-

1. Vastu and land testing
2. Directional analysis
3. Commencement of house construction
4. House entering
5. Ponds, lakes construction
6. Ayurveda is also considered as a part of Samhita
7. Rising and setting of planets with their effects
8. Karma Kanda ( Art related with performing religious rituals)

At the present Karma Kanda is an important part of Samhita. Religious

ceremonies and rituals organized in Indian houses and temples is
Samhita. Vastu ( Vedic art or construction) is also a part of Samhita.

QUALITIES OF AN ASTROLOGER

(1) Knowledge of texts :

An astrologer should be aware of various complementary texts
related to Astrology. Study of Astrology alone can never make one a
good Astrologer. Ignorance of related science like Vastu, Ayurveda,
Arithmetic, Geometry, Yoga , Color and Gems etc. can present odds
in his job. An Astrologer may have to depend on other professionals
or else it may produce an incomplete or erroneous result. During
predictions an Astrologer has to suggest remedial measures also.
Thus knowledge of remedial measure is a must for an Astrologer.
Other than this, understanding and knowledge of Gems, donations
for various planets, with their measurement is also required.

(2) Action :
A good Astrologer should be expert in all sub-parts of Astrology.
He should be well aware of subjects like planetary transits, predictions
as per current scenario, malefic position and their remedial action,
etc. Knowledge of action performed for pacification of malefic
situations by a Brahmin priest is also a must for an Astrologer.
Astrologer may himself not perform any puja but knowledge of how
it is performed is essential.

{ 24 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

(3) Maturity :
Maturity or wisdom is a vital quality, an Astrologer should
necessarily possess. He should be capable enough to independently
analyze a situation and take appropriate actions. He should have strong
mental balance and decision-making power even in adverse situations.
Many times situation like death, poverty, etc. combinations occur in
horoscope, an Astrologer must be very well prepared and ready to
handle such situations. An Astrologer thus should therefore be intelligent,
sharp minded and energetic enough to handle such situations.

(4) Righteousness :
Righteousness is the basic and essential requirement for an
Astrologer. All the above mentioned qualities are of no use if an
Astrologer doesn’t possess the qualities of truthfulness, honesty,
selflessness, compassion, helpfulness, decent behavior and an
unblemished character. An Astrologer possessing all these virtues
can perform the various –Astrological calculations in a correct and
proper manner which in turn will yield optimum results.
Astrology is not a mere process of prediction of individuals but
it considerably affects their present and future decision making and
well being too. Thus an Astrologer should perform his job with
honesty, truthfulness and patience and should control his anger and
acrimony.
{ 25 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

(5.) Patience :
An Astrologer should have patience. Spontaneous predictions
without proper analysis are unfair. Detailed knowledge of an event is
necessary during prediction. Good aspects of an individual’s
horoscope should not be elaborated wrongly to please a client. This
may lead to wrong direction for a client. Also, malefic combinations
and aspects in a horoscope should be predicted in a simple way with
solution. These malefic combinations should not be elaborated in
such a way that the person may get afraid or worried. Time and
reason of death of a person should not be told. An Astrologer should
have patience. A client’s horoscope and his situations should be kept
confidential. One client’s horoscope and his situations should be
kept confidential. One client’s life deeds or future should not be
discussed or told to other, other than the client himself and his family.
Revealing one client’s facts to outsiders is a derogatory work.

(6.) Logical and Practical Approach :

An Astrologer must be logical and practical in his approach.
One should be logical to interpret the position in one’s horoscope
while prediction. For one disease different Doctors suggest different
treatment. Thus improper analysis may result in mistake.
Every person has different logics and interpretations. Higher
courts sometimes reverse decision of lower courts. When judges
{ 26 }
MAHARSHI COLLEGE OF VEDIC ASTROLOGY
THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

with such high education and talent can interpret the same event
differently. Similar is the case with an Astrologer. Thus, one should
be practical in one’s approach.

APPLICATION OF ASTROLOGY
Indian seers and saints have made various scientific principles
that were helpful for the progress of an individual and society as a
whole. The sole aim of this principle was for human welfare. Indian
society has sixteen rituals to perform from birth to death. These
rituals were called as “ Solah Samskaara” in hindi. Other then these
sixteen rituals many general principles and by-laws were made for a
common individual. The main aim behind these developments was
for human being so that they can live their life with comfort and
discipline. By following these principles one becomes pure which
result in progress of that individual.
Astrology is said to be the eyes of Vedas. Astrology is used for
performing any auspicious deed like puja, marriage, house starting,
business establishment etc.
In ancient times, student used to stay at teacher’s place
(GuruKul) and learnt sixty-four types of arts. Astrology was one art
among these sixty-four arts.
Problems and obstacles are caused by deeds that a human per
form in his lifetime. Good or bad situations arise by the deeds that an
{ 27 }

THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

individual has done before. If the deeds are good, then the situation
of planets in horoscope of the person is also good. Similarly, if the
deeds are evil then the planets gets situated in malefic position in the
horoscope. This is the basis of Astrology. Thus id does not mean
that everything is to be left on to deeds. An individual’s duty is to live
life according to the procedures and guidelines that are propounded
by ancient saints. An individual has to be happy and content in what-
ever situation he gets. Astrology is helpful in reducing problems that
arise due to miss-deeds of previous births.
There is difference between “ Doing” and “ Happening”. An
individual performs business or job, etc. where profit and loss hap-
pens. Doing is in the hands of individual while happening is not in the
hands of an individual. Therefore an individual has to be careful in
doing and should be happy in result. Doing is the duty of an indi-
vidual while giving the result of these deed is in the hands of that
almighty. Thus, ancient texts tell that one must perform one’s duty
properly. By doing remedial measures of the malefic situations in a
horoscope, some relief and peace can be sought, but a person has to
face the repercussions of the miss-deeds that he has performed. By
taking medicines, disease of the body can be eradicated, but disease
generated out of one’s miss-deeds cannot be eradicated, by medi-
cines only. They will eradicate only after making that person suffer.
But it is difficult to draw conclusion that disease that an individually
{ 28 }

THE HARMONY OF SPACE & ELEGANCE

faces, which of them is deed generated and which are caused due
to malfunctioning of the body? Thus, it is the duty of an individual to
take curative measures and treatment incase of a disease is generated
in body. Similarly, it is also the duty of an individual to perform
pacification of various malefic combinations that have been gener-
ated in the horoscope.
With the help of Astrology one can reveal incidents in the past.
Future incidents that will occur can also be predicted in Astrology.
Here, an individual can make his deeds as per the knowledge and
guideline of Astrology. If obstacles, losses etc. are expected to arise
in future, then an individual should perform his work very carefully.
Like by knowing the forecast of rain, individual takes umbrella with
them while going out. Similarly, Astrology is forecast for future and
an individual should follow these principles for avoiding losses and
getting maximum profits. An individual wishes to get maximum hap-
piness in life. If he gets the information about what is going to reveal
for him in future then he can adjust his mind and work accordingly.
For examples, as per an individual horoscope partnership is not suit-
able for him. Now if that individual can use this information in a wise
way then the person will get happiness and profits and will be safe-
guarded for losses. In this way Astrology can help an individual to
know what is lying for him in future so that he can adjust himself and
his deeds for getting maximum returns.

FORMATION OF DAYS

Hora:
Earth rotates on it’s axis from West to East direction. Earth
completes one rotation in 24 hours. Due to rotation of Earth on it’s
axis, day and night are formed. Day occur in the part of Earth that
comes in front of Sun while on the other side night occur. Thus
everywhere day and night does not occur at the same time. At some
places it is day, at some night, while at some noon. Due to Earth’s
rotation from West to East, the Sun rises from East. Sunrise will
occur first in East direction. Thus, in India sunrise will occur first in
Eastern states like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, West-Bengal,
etc. In these states sunrise happens first. Sunrise happens here
somewhere between 4.30 to 5.30 a.m. While states in western part of
India has late sunrise. Thus in western states like Rajasthan, Gujarat,
Maharashtra, etc. sunrise occur late i.e. somewhere between 5.30 to
6.30 a.m. same situation occur during sunset time also as sunset
occurs early in the East and later in the West.
Earth rotates on it’s axis in 24 hours. In these 24 hours, 12 zodiac
signs rises in East direction at an interval of approximately two hours.
These 24 hours has 24 hora. Thus every hour has one hora.
There are 9 planets in Astrology. These 9 planets are Mercury,
Venus, Moon, Mars, Sun, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

Days :
Nomenclature of a day is done after the name of the planet who
is Lord of hora of that particular day. So the nomenclature of days
i.e. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc. is based on rise of hora of that
planet on that particular day. Sun is seen with the occurrence of
nature, so the first day and first hora belongs to Sun and first day is
called as Sunday after Sun. Situation of planets is in the following
order as Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun , Venus, Mercury and Moon.
Since Sun is seen in the nature first so the first hora is of Sun.
Thus the first day is Sunday. After the first hora of Sun, the second
hora will be of Venus. Similarly, the third hora will be of Mercury,
fourth of Moon, fifth of Saturn, sixth of Jupiter, seventh of Mars,
eighth of Sun, ninth of Venus, tenth of Mercury, eleventh of Moon,
twelfth of Saturn, thirteenth of Jupiter, fourteenth of Mars, fifteenth
of Sun, sixteenth of Venus, seventeenth of Mercury, eighteenth of
Moon, nineteenth of Saturn, twentieth of Jupiter, twenty-first of Mars,
twenty-second of Sun, twenty-third of Venus, twenty-fourth of Mer-
cury and twenty-fifth that is the first hora of next day of Moon.
Thus, the name of the next day after Sunday will be Monday, which
is after moon.
Last ( twenty-fourth) hora of Monday is that of Jupiter, so next
day first hora will be that of Mars. Thus, the next day after Monday
will be called as Tuesday.

Last (twenty-fourth) hara of Tuesday is that of Venus, so next

day first hora will be that of Mercury. Thus, the next day after Tues-
day will be called as Wednesday.
Last( twenty-fourth) hora of Wednesday is that of Saturn, so
next day first hora will be that of Jupiter. Thus, the next day after
Wednesday will be called as Thursday.
Last(twenty-fourth) hora of Thursday is that of Sun, so next
day first hora will be that of Venus. Thus, the next day after Thursday
will be call ed as Friday.
Last(twenty-fourth) hora of Friday is that of Moon, so next day
first hora will be that of Saturn. Thus, the next day after Friday will
be called as Saturday.
Last(twenty-fourth)hora of Saturday is that of Mars, so next
day first hora will be that of Sun. Thus, the next day after Saturday
will be Called as Sunday.
Similarly, these cycle goes on. In this way the days were formed

divided into two parts. Sun’s course in the North of equator is called
as summer solstice while Sun’s course in the South of equator is
called as winter solstice. During summer solstice Sun travels from
Capricorn zodiac sign to Gemini zodiac sign while during it’s winter

meaning for five and Anga meaning for five. Thus Panchanga has 5
parts. These 5 parts are the five pillars of Astrology. These five parts
are Constellation, Yoga ( Combination ) , Karana, Tithi and Days.

TITHI :-
One face of moon is called as Tithi. Tithi gives the information
about the distance between Sun and Moon at a particular time. One
lunar month has 30 tithi, but sometime they get reduced. Tithi on a
particular day is calculated on the basis of existence of a Tithi at the
time of Sunrise. Thus, when Sunrise occurs in a particular tithi, then
the whole day is said to be presence of that tithi. If a tithi does not
txist at the time of Sunrise, then that tithi gets reduced.

KARANA :-
Half part of tithi is called as Karana. One lunar month has 30
tithi, thus one lunar month has 30 tithi, thus one lunar month will have
60 Karana. There are total 11 Karana, out of which four are stationary
while seven are moving.

GLOSSAR
Stars
Thousands of glowing bodies are called as Star. Stars have
light of their own. Sun is also a Star. Star are like Sun only and the
thermonuclear reaction inside them is the source of their immense
energy. Stars are very –very far away from Earth. Light of these stars
pass through many layers in atmosphere and reach Earth. Thus they
look glittering in the sky. Many of these stars are bigger than Sun but
due to their far away distances from Earth they are not as clearly
Seen as the Sun .
Planets

Glowing bodies that are brilliant and constantly shining in the

sky are called as planets. Planets do not have light of their own. They
reflect the light of the Sun. These planets revolve round the Sun.
They are also smaller in size but they look bigger due to their nearness
of Earth.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STARS AND PLANETS

If skies seen on a dark night then tow types of glowing bodies
will be seen. One whose glow is seen constantly while the other who
have glimmer in their glow. These heavenly glowing bodies are
respectively called as stars and planets.

Ecliptic Path
Earth and other planets revolve round the Earth. But in Indian
Astrology as discussed before that due to convenience Earth is taken
as stationary while Sun is taken as moving. Sun and other planets
have a revolutionary path on which they travel. This path is elliptical.
Each planet traverses through this path. These paths are called as
traversing path or elliptical path of planets.

Northern and Southern Hemisphere

Earth is like a big ball. One imaginary line divides Earth into two
halves. These lines are called as Equator. Equator. Equator divides
Earth into two equal parts. These parts are called as hemisphere. The
hemisphere that is above Equator is called as Northern hemisphere
while the hemisphere that is below Equator is called as Southern
hemisphere.

Plane of Zodiac
Sky is unlimited and unfathomable. In this huge sky there are
innumerable planets and constellations. Out of these one solar system
is of our Sun. There are similar many solar systems that exist and are
spread in many direction and plane. Plane where our solar system
and zodiac are situated is called as the plane of solar system or
zodiac.

Latitude
Earth is like a very big ball. The upper point of it is called as
North Pole while the below point is called as South Pole. There is an
imaginary line, which divides Earth into two equal halves, which divide
these two poles into exactly equal halves. These line is called as
Equator. The hemisphere that is above Equator is called as Northern
hemisphere while the hemisphere that is below Equator is called as
Southern hemisphere. There are many lines to Equator in both the
hemisphere. These lines are called as Latitudes. The exist from East
to West and with their references the distance of any place from
Equator or poles can be easily calculated. Equator is situated at 0
degree latitude.

Longitude
As Latitude lines divide Earth into North South direction simi-
larly Latitude lines cut Earth in East West direction. There are 360 in
number. These lines start from North pole and they finish in South
pole. These lines cut Latitude lines at many points. When Sun
comes on a Latitude line then all the points situated at that Latitude
line have noon time. In round Earth, longitude line that is exactly
opposite this line will have midnight at this time. Thus this type of
information are available by longitudinal lines.

Winter- Solstice
Sun reaches to the farthest point in the South of its elliptical
path, this point is called as Southern point. At this time Sun’s rays
are at right angle on the tropic of Capricorn in Southern hemisphere.
Thus nights are longer and days are shorter. This is called as Winter
Solstice. Traversing of Sun from Cancer to Sagittarius zodiac sign is
termed as Winter Solstice.

Summer Solstice
Sun reaches to the point in the North of its elliptical path, this
point is called as Northern point. At this time Sun’s rays are at right
angle on the tropic of Cancer in Northern hemisphere. Thus there is
summer season in the northern hemisphere. This phenomenon occurs
every year on 21st June. Thus this phenomenon results in longer
days and shorter nights. This is called as Summer Solstice. Traversing
of Sun from Capricorn zodiac sign it Gemini zodiac sign is termed
as Summer Solstice.

Various Calendars and Ephemeris

There is lot of importance of time in Astrology. Mutual revolution
and rotation of Sun, Moon and Earth are the basis for making of
calendars and ephemeris. There are many types of calendar that are
use. All of these have different background. These are based on
months. Ephemeris and calendar can be based on four different type
of month systems. They are as follows.

1. Lunar Month
2. Western Calendar and Month
3. Constellation Month
4. Solar Month

Lunar Month :
Lunar Month is based on revolution of Moon around the Earth.
One month has approximately 30 days. Lunar month starts from first
day after No Moon ( Bright Half ) to No Moon. There are two types
of Lunar months that are used in India.

1. Lunar Month that end on No Moon day ( Amant )

Lunar month that end in No Moon day are called as Amant
Lunar Month. This month starts from next day after no Moon and
end on No Moon day. In this month, Full Moon day comes in the

middle of the month. Generally this month has 30 days. Parts of

Maharashtra and in South India this system is used.

2. Lunnar Month that end on Full Moon day ( Purnimant)

Lunar month that end in Full Moon day are called as Purnimant
Lunar Month. This month starts from next day after Full Moon and
end on Full Moon day. In this month, No Moon day comes in the
middle of the month. Generally this month has 30 days. This method
is more adopted in North India.

Difference between these two lunar months

Purnimant and Amant lunar months are actually same with the
only differences of start and end days. Former ends on Full Moon
day while the later ends on No Moon day.

Western Month
Earth rotates round the Sun in 365 and one fourth day. This is
called as one year. One year has twelve months. Western calendar is
based on this system. In this system every year starts on January 1st
while every months starts on first date of each month. Every fourth
year in this system has 365 days in which one extra day is added to
February month by making it of 29 days.

Cansutellation Month
Zodiac is divided into 27 constellations. Moon crosses each
constellation in one day. Thus Moon takes 27 days to cross each
constellation. Time taken by Moon to cross this constellation is called
as constellation month. It is a position of Moon constellation.

Solar Month
Sun complete its revolution in twelve Zodic signs in one year.
Sun traverss in twelve signs in one year. One month of Sun in one
sign is one solar month. Sun cross one zodiac sign in one month and
reaches other sign after 30 days of traversing from the former sing.

Year Based on different Ephemer is Systems.

Month iscalculated differently in different parts and countries.
Like as in Western Calendar every year starts 1"January but as per
Hindu calendar ever year starts on chaitra Month on first day No
Moon ( Chaitra Shukla Pratipada ) which generally comes some-
where in March or April. Below are few of the famous and more
used ephemeris( calendar) systems are given .
1. Hindu Calendar
2. English (Western ) Calendar

(4.) Muslim ( Urdu ) Calendar

Muslim calendar is also based on Moon. Every month starts

from the day as soon as Moon is seen. There is difference between
Lunar and Solar year as lunar year is shorter. There is no system
introduced in Muslim calendar to balance it. Thus Muslim calendar
year is shorter than others. Every third year the difference in months
occurs. Thus Muslim festival can occur anytime in a year. Muslim
calendar is called as “ Hijri Sunn” and its month are as follows :-

VARNASHRAM

Hindu society divided castes according to works. These four

castes were Brahmins, Khsatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. All the people
in ancient era had been bifurcated in these four parts based on their
work. “ Brahmin” category was assigned to people who were well-
behaved, self controlled scholars of good behavior and allocated the
works of teaching, performing prayers and charity to them. “
Khsatriya” were those, who had good physique and were industri-
ous. They were charged with the work of protecting the society as
well as controlling it. The people assigned with the work of agricul-
ture, trade and commerce were called “ Vaishya” and the people
allocated to the work of serving these three castes were called “
Shudra”.
That’s how the caste system came into being. Man received
good services, and his life became systematic due to this division of
labour. The people of all the four castes got engaged in their works
with full competence. Human society made of four castes became
like the human body. The Brahmins were engaged in the works of
gaining knowledge and spreading it. They acted like the brain in the
body. Khastriya like hands were engaged in protecting society. Vaishya
fulfilled the physical needs of society. They were like the stomach
nourishing the whole body by taking food. Shudra were like the legs

Elements
All the things in this visible world in divided into five elements. These
elements are present in all the living or nonliving objects in this world.
These five elements are present in a fixed proportion in each
object. Due to imbalance of this proportion the elements become
extinct or useless. These elements are present in a certain proportion
in human body also. Till the time these elements are in balance in
human, he is healthy. Imbalance of this ratio in human body results in
stress and illness. There are innumerable planets in solar system but
life exist only on Earth. The reason for this is that the five elements
are present in a fixed and definite proportion. These five elements are
Earth, Fire, Sky, Air and Water.
Water is the basis of life of all living organisms. Water is present
in present in three fourth part of human beings. This shows that
water is very important for life. Fire is the basic cause of energy.
Energy of Sun, Kitchen, electricity, etc. are all forms of fire energy.
Thus all of them represent fire element.
Air is the basis of life for all livings. Life is possible for some
time without water and food but it is not possible without air even for
few minutes.

bodies that exist in sky. Gravitational pull, magnetism, reflection and
refraction rays, etc. all affect life on Earth. All these rays and lights
come through sky, thus all these invisible effects are effects of sky.

occur again and again after a specific time. The day these cycle will
repeat after a stipulated time, place & direction of their occurrence
are also fixed. Sun will always rise from the East direction only and
