HBO CASE STUDY: THE MOTOROLLA WORK SCHEME

1. What are the possible employee stressors in the "job sharing" scheme of Motorolla and correlate the explanation
between demographics such as gender and marital status?
- In job share you are dealing with another employee. If the employee is not compatible, fail to share a work
style, keep coworkers and customers uninformed and uncomfortable, you are ultimately responsible for dealing with the
job share as a partner. Without good communication and close coordination between managers and the job sharers,
confusion about who’s responsible for completing specific tasks creates a lack of countability. And also, the important
information may be lost or result in a miscommunication. An employee may feel torn about working full time especially
after having a family, that is one of the reasons why employees want to job share. It's not just about the workload but
also their real desire to spend more time with their family.
- Demographic, gender and marital status are all about information about yourself. When you are applying for a
job, they will look all of this information about you. These may be confidential in a workplace especially in your co-
workers. It's important to have a privacy about our self because privacy enables us to create boundaries and protect
ourselves from unwarranted interference in our lives, allowing us to negotiate who we are and how we want to interact
with the world around us.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of job sharing to job sharers and their managers?
These are the advantages of job sharing:
• Improve recruiting by attracting qualified employees who don’t want to work full-time.
• Improve retention by offering an alternative that may appeal to many workers.
• Reduce absenteeism and tardiness because of the flexibility offered.
• Give workers time to deal with family and other personal responsibilities.
• Give the employer a pool of workers who can be asked to return to full-time work temporarily during high
demand periods or to fill in for other employees who must be away from their jobs unexpectedly.
• Increase productivity as each partner makes sure to do his or her full share.
• Enhance output because of collaboration and exchange of ideas between partners
• Increase engagement especially when a partner goes from full time to part time—instead of stress from
missing deadlines, there is pride at getting the job done.
These are the disadvantages of job sharing:
• Need for additional supervisory time
• Possible disruption of work flow
• Lack of communication
• Scheduling challenges for training and meetings

3. Can this work scheme by Motorolla be implemented in the Philippines? Why yes/no? State some examples.
- Yes, because some of the company or corporation need people for 24 hours like Universal Robina Corporation.
They operate 24hrs non-stop, all the machine operator, supervisor and other employees were shifting.
HBO COMPREHENSIVE EXAM

Part I: Case Study (40 Points)

Laura’s Leadership and Management
1. In the case of Laura, do you think she is more of a leader than a manager or vice-versa? Why?
- Laura is more of a manager than a leader, leadership is about getting people to understand and believe in your
vision and to work with you to achieve your goals which Laura lacks. She is more about administering and making sure
the day-to-day things are happening as they should.
2. Can her position (director) be a both leader and a manager? Explain why yes/not.
- Yes, a director can be a manager and a leader simultaneously. Laura must delegate the managerial
responsibilities to the two managers. Thus, building up the managers’ confidence and use their problem-solving skills to
help their staff. It will also enable Laura to focus on building a greater sense of staff commitment to the company’s
mission statement.
3. If you will be Laura, how will you handle Kelly’s and Linda’s weaknesses so that they would become strength
- Laura and the managers should complete a leadership or management assessment to determine their personal
skills, learn how they can support their employees in the best way possible, and figure how they can work together to
use each other’s strengths to run the department. The managers can use the style approach to structure their
managerial styles as manager 1 uses a task-oriented approach whereas managers 2 demonstrates a relationship-
oriented style. Laura may also focus on developing her leadership skills by building on her current strengths.
Furthermore, Laura may want to revisit the responsibilities and roles of every position and how her division’s work
supports the overall organizational mission. Aligning with the general mission and communication it to the staff can help
enhance morale and provide clarity on the department’s direction and role.
4. What Leadership Style is effective for Laura? Why?
- Focusing on skills (Focusses on the capability to resolve complex problems. The non-profit is experiencing
various difficulties at the organizational level involving high-turnover)
-Supportive (encourages employees by defining goals, eradicating obstacles, clarifying path, and providing
support. This kind of leadership can work well in boosting employee morale)
- Understanding (Treats employees as complete human beings, consider standpoints and emotions. Creates
motivation by providing a clear vision, acting as a social architect, developing trust, and building positive self-regard)

ll. Reflective Commentary

- In this time of pandemic, we all need people who are willing to help the country and those who in need. When
i read the news about SMC repurposed its liquor plants to be able to produce ethyl alcohol for donation to medical
health workers and other government frontliners, I am so touched because they are sacrificing their profit just to help
other people who in needs. They don't care about money. Their priority are the people who needs help. Because I know
without people, there will be no business. Now we are facing the new normal, I am very amaze of what SMC CEO says,
they care about their workers and people. They make sure that they are safe and also their product. And doing their job
right to follow the rules for good hygiene, social distancing and mass gatherings.
lll. Essay/ Reflection
1. State eight (8) thing you learn in the course Human Behavior and Organization, explain each.
- The best thing I've learned in this subject was the things that Sir bob have said about his life. His
experience and the way he foresee about life. It inspired me to do the best in my life to achieve my
goals.
- Being responsible in what I do
- Having confidence in everything
- Being a good leader
- Applying all the lessons in real life
- How to be professional especially in work
- How good communication is important
- How to be independent especially in exam, just answer what you can and don't cheat.
2. What are the New Normal that you encounter in your personal life and what you are seeing in the news? What are
the impacts of these to yourself? What are the impacts of these to your studies?
- The new normal I am facing it right now is not seeing all the time of my loved ones in who are living in another
places. Going outside wearing mask because it's a must. And social distancing when I’m at outside. In everyday news
since the covid-19 came up, almost the topic of the news was all about covid-19 which very informative. And also, to be
aware in everything of what we do. These past few months, I am very sad for what is happening in this world. Many
people were affected by this, especially in going outside because we need to prevent get-together, so many of the
school were going to have an online school. For me, this is so hard because I know that, not many people have phones
and internet to connect and browse.
