How To Recognize A Shoplifter and a Thief

A- Now, here are some questions to help you get started.

1. Why do you think about shoplifting? It should not be done. It causes lost
to companies and to the country; 35 million dollars! That is a lot. I guess it
cannot be changed, or can it?
2. Why do you think people do it? People might have different reasons.
Some people shoplift because they need some basic products and they have
no money to buy them; others shoplift because the thrill of it… they like it;
others are kleptomaniacs. There are several reasons for people to shoplift.
3. Do you think that only poor people do it? No, definitely not. There are
many types of shoplifters, as we see on reading one; professionals, drug
addicts, kleptomaniacs, etc…
4. Tell us more about it. Well, shoplifting might be common in Dominican
Republic. I think the main reason of it is poverty.
In the other hand, here are some fun facts about shoplifting:
a. Shoplifting is often not a premeditated crime: 73 percent of adult and 72
percent of juvenile shoplifters do not plan to steal in advance.
b. Approximately 25 percent of shoplifters are kids, 75 percent are adults.
Fifty five percent of adult shoplifters say they started shoplifting in their
teens.
c. Shoplifting is not going away. In fact, it is increasing. While large chain
stores have the financial resources to install security cameras and hire
security guards, small mom and pop shops may struggle to justify
security costs. Yet, shoplifting is a crime of opportunity. By not investing
in these and other loss prevention measures, you are making it easier
for shoplifters to steal.

Reading Skills
Using Headings and Subtitles

Writers often use headings and subtitles to help the reader. They are like signs on a road. They
tell you what's coming.

1. Look at Reading 1. What is each subtitle?

-Compulsive shoplifters
-Professionals

-The poor

-Thrill seekers

-Drug addicts

-Kleptomaniacs

a. How do the subtitles help you understand the organization of the reading? It helps
me understand the order of the reading by classifying them according to the statistics. It
also classifies the types of shoplifters in a way we can understand each type better.

b. How do they help you understand what is coming? They refer to what each type is.
For example, professionals –those who steal for profit.

2. Look at Reading 2. What is each subtitle?

-Is shoplifting a serious problem?

-Why do teens shoplift?

-What should I do if my friend shoplifts?

a. How do the subtitles help you understand the organization of the reading? It helps
me understand the reading by organizing the ideas in a logical way. Each subtitle is
connected to one another. First, we introduce shoplifting as a serious problem, and then
we refer to teens who are most part of shoplifters. Then, we try to help them.

b. How do they help you understand what is coming? They give a hint of what is
coming. If you say ‘’why do teens shoplift?’’ then it is obvious that the author is going to
give some reasons why teens shoplift.

Talk about Your Ideas
1. Is shoplifting a problem in your culture? Why or Why not? I think so. Many
people shoplift in the Dominican Republic. I think it could be because of poverty
or just pleasure.
2. If people shoplift, why do they do it?
This might include anything from losing a TV show, to problems with an intimate
relationship or a child with an illness. The shoplifting can be described as a hole that
they want to fill - in the same way that people eat too much, drink too much or work too
much.

3. How can each of these groups help stop shoplifting?

a. Police officers. Attaching to their values and the morals of their career.
b. Teachers. Thinking they have to be a role model for those they share they
knowledge.
c. Store owners. They know what it would feel if someone go shoplifting, they
shop. Treat others, as you want to be treated.
d. Parents. Many people work for their children. Have empathy; think about those
who work for their loved ones.
e. The government. Think about the wellbeing of the country.
