Determining Area of A Rectilinear Field by Tape

Surveyors can determine the area of a rectilinear field by tape using the following steps: 1) Divide the field into triangles by drawing lines from a central station or marked point. 2) Find the area of each triangle using formulas. 3) Add the areas of the triangles to determine the total area of the field. The purpose is to acquire skills in determining areas by dividing polygons into triangles and using traverse techniques to establish boundary points.

DETERMINING AREA OF A RECTILINEAR FIELD BY TAPE

Area can be measured in different units, such as square inches, square meters, or
square feet. The area of a shape is a number that tells how many square units are
needed to cover its shape.

Surveyors can find an area of a field by drawing a shape on a lined-graph paper, and
then start counting the number of squares inside the shape, but this is not very practical
since a lot of time and effort is needed to accomplish this, so often times surveyors use
area-formulas instead. Every polygon and circle have a formula for finding its
measurements and area.

In this fieldwork, surveyors are expected to develop in determining the area of a polygon
field using the tape instrument only by dividing the area into triangles.

Radial traversing is an ideal way for effectively establishing a large number of points in
an area, specifically when a total station instrument is employed. The purpose of
traverse is to be able to locate the unknown points created, relative to each other and to
locate all points within the traverse relative to a common grid.

In surveying, traverse is defined as one of the field operations for measuring the lengths
and directions of a number of straight lines connecting a series of points on a piece of
land. Each of these points are called a traverse station, and each straight line are called
a traverse leg. Almost all the works done in surveying requires a few or more
calculations to reduce those measurements into a more useful and handy form for
determining a distance of a specific area, earthwork volumes, land areas and many
more. A traverse is established by measuring the angles and distance between the
points that found the boundary of a site or a field of land.

The main purposes of this field work are to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills
in determining the area of a rectilinear field by staking a central station or marking a
point, to improve skills in the analysis of the area of triangles, and to develop the
capacity to maintain or lead or to follow the designated/desired task of one’s group and
to be fully responsible in the performance of that assigned task.
