CIVL 4600 Assignment 2 Due: January 30, 2003: 32.25 2-#8 & 2-#7 Bars

The document provides instructions for an assignment to calculate the nominal moment capacity (Mn) and corresponding steel strain (εs) for various beam cross sections under different loading conditions and material properties. Students are asked to calculate Mn and εs for an example cross section and several other cross sections with varying dimensions, reinforcement amounts, concrete strengths, and steel grades. They are also asked to analyze how changes to these properties affect Mn and ductility.

CIVL 4600

Assignment 2 Due: January 30, 2003

BEAM CROSS SECTION A) Calculate the nominal (positive) moment

b capacity, Mn, and the corresponding steel strain,
εs, for this cross section given the following
properties:

b = 12 in
d
d = 21.5 in
As = 3-#7 Bars
As f’c = 3000 psi
fy = 60,000 psi

B–F) Calculate Mn and the corresponding value of εs for each of the sets of cross-
sectional properties listed in the table below. Assume for Part E that “Grade 90” rebar
actually exists.

PROBLEM b (in) d (in) As f’c (psi) fy (psi)

B 12 32.25 3-#7 Bars 3000 60,000
C 12 21.5 2-#8 & 2-#7 Bars 3000 60,000
D 12 21.5 3-#7 Bars 4500 60,000
E 12 21.5 3-#7 Bars 3000 90,000
F 18 21.5 3-#7 Bars 3000 60,000

G) Compare the results from B–F to those obtained from the reference cross section
A, and discuss the sensitivity of the nominal moment capacity and the ductility to
changes in each of these properties, i.e. changes in b, d, As, f’c, and fy. Use εs at
ultimate as a measure of ductility. Which properties have the greatest effect on
Mn? Which have the least? Answer the same questions with respect to ductility.

H) The beam shown below is subjected to a uniformly distributed load, w, over its
entire length. What is the largest value of w that the beam can withstand prior to
collapse? For simplicity, you may assume that w includes the weight of the
beam itself.
