DEFINITION OF TERMS
BACKFILL- is mainly natural material that is used to fill in some void left after
construction or excavation efforts.
BORROW PIT- also known as a sand box, is an area where material has been dug for
use at another location.
CONTINGENCY- a future event or circumstance that is possible but cannot be
predicted with certainty.
DIGESTIVE CHAMBER-
DRAINAGE- the act or process of removing water or liquid from a place or thing
EFFLUENT- is an outflowing of water or gas from a natural body of water, or from a
manmade structure.
EXCAVATION-any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in the earth’s surface
formed by earth removal.
FLOWABLE FILL- is a self-compacting low material with a flowable consistency that
is used as an economical fill or backfill material as an alternative to compacted
granular fill.

SALINATION- the act of washing with salt water
SANITARY SEWER- a system of pipes used to transport human waste.
SEPTIC TANK - As used throughout this document a holding tank in which the solid
matter of sewage is decomposed or digested by bacteria under predominantly
anaerobic conditions where no on-site disposal occurs and, therefore, is not under
the jurisdiction of the local Health Department.

SEWAGE - is water-carried waste, in solution or suspension that is intended to be
removed from a community.
SEWERAGE SYSTEM - The system of pipes used to collect and carry rain, waste
water and trade waste away for treatment and disposal is called the sewerage or the
waste water system.
SEWER - A hydraulically designed, usually subterranean, conduit used to transport
wastewater.

TRENCH- is defined as a narrow underground excavation that is deeper than it is
wide, and no wider than 15 feet.
WASTE- is any substance which is discarded after primary use, or it’s worthless,
defective and of no use.
WASTE DISPOSAL- Proper disposition of a discarded or discharged material in
accordance with local environmental guidelines or laws
WASTE PIPE-is any pipe in a drainage installation which receives the discharge of
any fixture except water closet and conveys the same to the soil branch, soil pipe or
house drain.
WASTEWATER – The liquid and water-carried wastes from residences, businesses,
and industries together with any ground or surface water that may be present.
WATER SALINIZATION- the process by which water-soluble salts accumulate in
the soil.
