CIVIL ENGINEERING COMPILATION OF PLATES

on
CE 51C – Timber Design

Prepared by:

Engr. Kenny Glenn Silud, CE

Instructions:
1.) Draw a Two-Storey Residential Plan (ground floor, second floor and roof plan).
The drawing must consist of architectural and structural plans (top view only).
2.) Draw the Residential Plan to scale (1:100mm) with complete dimensions and
labels indicating the type of structural member it represents.
3.) Your residential plan must be within the range of 50 to 75 sq meters floor area.
4.) Your plan must be different from your classmate’s plans. Since this is an individual
work. Choose a lumber with the 80% stress-grade group in the NSCP Timber
Specification Table.
5.) You may use either computer generated programs or drawn by hand in making
your Plan.
6.) Make sure that the plan you made has a realistic and practical approach. Ex.
Timber members length should consider readily available commercial size (max 3-
m in length, the available dimensions, the min and max spacing of FJ and among
others).
7.) Based on your residential plan, you have to analyze the structural members that
you identified from instruction #2. The following structural members should be
present and not limited to:
a. Tributary area
b. Floor Joist
c. Girders
d. Columns (Winslow/Combined Stress and NSCP)
e. Connectors (if present)
f. Purlins
g. Truss Members
8.) The variables are that will be stated below should be chosen by the student based
on his/her preference. Again, consider realistic and practical approach on the
values in your variables. The following should be present but not limited to:

80% stress-grade specified timber material with the following properties:

Bending and Tension Parallel to Grain:
Modulus of Elasticity:
Compression Parallel to Grain:
Compression Perpendicular to Grain:
Shear Parallel to Grain:
Specific Gravity
Allowable deflection
i flooring (3/4’ thick Marine plywood)
i liveload
Timber material trial sizes that are available in the market

Spacing for FJ
Column height
i roofing load
Truss details
One howe truss with 6 panels
Pitch
Sheathing load
Roof live load
Horizontal wind pressure
Spacing of rafters

Note:
1.) It’s up to the student’s decision if they will used NSCP Factored Loading on
their analysis.
2.) Also consider using the number of letters within your name on the values of
your preferred variable.
3.) If there are variables that can’t be found within the list given then the student
shall provide it.

9.) The compilation of plate should be scanned as one pdf file. The order of the
compilation will be the following:
a. Architectural Plan
b. Structural Plans
c. Structural Analysis
c.1: Tributary area
c.2: Floor Joist
c.3: Girders
c.4: Columns (Winslow/Combined Stress and NSCP)
c.5: Connectors (if present)
c.6: Purlins
c.7: Truss Members
d. Summary of Dimensions

10.) Summary of dimension, should look like this. See table below as an example.

11.) No computer software/program will be allowed to be used on the structural analysis
part. Everything must be manually computed.
12.) Submission date will be July 15, 2020.
13.) If you can do this compilation of plate PROPERLY (ask those previous students of
mine what this word exactly mean), then expect a passing grade regardless of the
scores on your exams. Afterall, this is an application of the theoretical topics we
have done so far. If you failed to submit the compilation of plate then expect a failing
grade since this individual project is part of your course requirement in fulfilling the
course subject. Make sure that you are complete with your seatwork and you have
taken our examinations for the first sentence to be considered.
14.) Make sure that you will submit your own work. Students who are caught plagiarism,
duplicating the work of their classmates and other form of cheating will be
automatically get a failing grade pursuant to our UC Rules and Regulations for
Students Etiquette.
