Planet Yogas

The document discusses three yogas - Subha, Asubha, and Misra - that help determine whether a planet's influence is more beneficial or maleficious. Subha yoga indicates auspicious effects when a planet is aspected by or conjunct benefics. Asubha yoga indicates inauspicious effects when a planet is aspected by or conjunct malefics. Misra yoga is a mix of the two. The document provides detailed criteria for assessing each yoga and a mathematical method for quantifying a planet's Subha or Asubha influence. These yogas are important for judging the well-being of a planet and the effects it causes.

Subha, Asubha, and Misra Yogas 249

Subha, Asubha, and Misra Yogas
Any planet can give good or ill in any house that it may be placed
in. The influences upon a planet indicate whether the planet has
more ill effects or more good effects to give. The house itself
indicates through what agency and what manner the effects of the
planets are realized. Three yogas from Satya Jatakam help us to judge
the greater benefic or malefic influences upon a planet:

SUBHA -auspicious- YOGA

Indicates good effects of the planet in relation to the house it is in.
Formed when the planet is:
1. Aspected by benefics.
2. With benefics. (If the benefic is debilitated, however, it will be
harmful to the outcome of the planet under consideration).
3. Hemmed between benefics.
4. With auspicious Tara: the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, or 9th nakshatras
from the Janma Nakshatra. The Moon is not considered for this.
5. In the rasi or navamsa of a benefic. (If a planet is in the rasi or
navamsa of a benefic, which is its debilitation rasi, then this does
not qualify as a helpful rasi or navamsa. Though a benefic rasi, it
will still decrease good results).

ASUBHA -inauspicious- YOGA

Indicates ill effects of the planet in relation to the house it is in.
Formed when the planet is:
1. Aspected by malefics.
2. With malefics. (If the malefic is in own rasi or vargottama, it will
not be harmful to the eventual outcome. If the malefic is in
moolatrikona or exaltation, it will actually be helpful to the
eventual outcome).
3. Hemmed between malefics.

4. With inauspicious Tara: the 3rd, 5th, or 7th nakshatras from the
Janma Nakshatra. The Moon is not considered for this.
5. In the rasi or navamsa of a malefic. (If a planet is in the rasi or
navamsa of a malefic that happens to be its own, or exaltation,
rasi, or navamsa, or if the planet is in vargottama, then this does
not qualify as a harmful rasi. As a malefic rasi, it will give
hardship, but it will not prevent good results. In fact, it will
actually increase the possibility of good results as the final
outcome, particularly in the case of exaltation or moolatrikona).

MISRA -mixed- YOGA

Formed by a combination of Subha and Asubha Yogas. Indicates
a mix of good and ill effects. Most planets will fall under this yoga,
thus it becomes important to judge whether a planet has more
auspicious or inauspicious influences upon it to determine whether
the native will experience more or less happiness in regards to that
planet s indications.

1. In all cases of these yogas the natural benefic or malefic natures

of the planets are considered, not the temporal nature. The Moon
a benefic when its paksha bala is 40 or greater (when 120-240
degrees from the Sun), and a malefic when its pakshabala is 20 or
less (when 300-60 degrees from the Sun). Otherwise the Moon
should be considered as neutral since it will not be benefic or
malefic enough to have much effect.
2. The consideration of the Tara is as significant as a conjunction of
a benefic or malefic.
3. The consideration of the rasi or navamsa is approximately half as
significant as a benefic or malefic conjunction.
4. The consideration of a planet being hemmed between benefics or
malefics is as significant as a benefic or malefic conjunction.
5. If the planet is joined with the 6th, 8th or 12th lord in the 6th, 8th or
12th house, it will be harmed, unless the planet is also the lord of
a dusthana.
6. These yogas are considered with planetary aspects.
Subha, Asubha, and Misra Yogas 251

Generally a planet will be causing a Misra Yoga that is either a bit

more auspicious or a bit more inauspicious. In this case, a clear
analysis of the Dasa influence is important in order to determine
when the good effects of the planet are to be realized and when the
ill effects are to be realized. The dasa periods of the Subha influences
will bring more good effects, and the dasa periods of the Asubha
influences will bring more ill effects.
The planets that are strongly under the influence of a Subha, or
Asubha Yoga indicate the more extreme aspects of the native s life.
These will have to be considered to determine the greater joys and
tragedies of the native.
The dusthanas (6th, 8th and 12th houses) are no doubt troublesome
houses, but planets in these houses can give good effects if they have
primarily beneficial influences upon them. Planets in these houses
that have primary malefic influences upon them indicate a lot of grief
and tragedy.

The following table will help you mathematically determine the

quality of the Subha or Asubha Yoga:

Subha/Asubha Yoga
Benefic/Malefic Rasi, 0:
Dignity in Rasi: *
Benefic/Malefic Navamsa, 0
Dignity in Navamsa: *
Vargottama: + 60

* The dignity should be considered when judging whether a planet is
in the rasi or navamsa of a benefic or malefic. Add 30 if the planet is
in the rasi of a benefic; subtract 30 if a planet is in the rasi of a
malefic. Additionally modify this by the dignity: If the planet is in
exaltation add 60, if in moolatrikona add 45, if in own rasi add 30,
and if in debilitation subtract 60.

**The dignity, as well as whether it is vargottama, of the conjuncting

planet should be considered when judging the benefic or malefic
effect of a planet s conjunctions:
1. 30 points are added if the conjuncting planet is a malefic in
exaltation.
2. 15 points are added if the conjuncting planet is a malefic in
moolatrikona.
3. No points are added or subtracted if the conjuncting planet is a
malefic in its own rasi, or in vargottama.
4. 60 points are subtracted it the conjuncting planet is a malefic and
not in the mentioned dignities.
5. 60 points are added if the conjuncting planet is a benefic and not
in debilitation.
6. No points are added or subtracted if the conjuncting planet is a
benefic in debilitation.

This mathematical method I have created for my students; though

not adopted from classical texts it has proven as a simple reliable
indicator of a planet s well being.

SUBHA/ASUBHA YOGAS FOR QUALIFYING YOGAS

Subha and Asubha Yogas are particularly helpful in judging the
well being of a planet in a house, a planet that is causing some yoga,
etc. After determining the effects of any yoga, etc. that a planet is
causing, consider the Subha/Asubha Yoga in order to determine the
quality of the yoga, etc.
