Subject: Instrumentation& Measurement Class: Second Divisions: Electrical&Electronic (1) Time: 3 Hours Examiner: Lecturer Faten Fakhry Date: 2016

This document contains instructions for a final examination in Instrumentation & Measurement for an Electrical & Electronic Engineering class. It provides 6 questions to choose from, with each question consisting of multiple parts related to course concepts. Question topics include: [1] calculating average deviation and variance from measurement data, [2] designing a multimeter circuit and describing an AC voltmeter, [3] analyzing an unbalanced bridge circuit and comparing sensor types, [4] calculating acceleration voltage and beam position from CRT deflection plate measurements, [5] deriving a linear regression from experimental data, and [6] drawing ramp waveforms for a DVM. Students must attempt 4 questions out of the 6 provided, with varying point values allocated for

Final Examination 2015-2016
Subject: Instrumentation& Measurement Class: Second
Divisions: Electrical&Electronic (1) Time: 3 Hours
Examiner: lecturer Faten Fakhry Date: 2016
Attempt four questions only
Q1.) a)The following reading were recorded by testing measurement

No. of reading 3 5 4 2 6 1 2
Deviation from
the mean (di)
-0.43 -0.13 0.47 d 0.17 -1.03 -0.73

If summation of all reading values is (513.6), calculate:

1- The average deviation (D)
2- The variance (v)

b) Define only three:

i) persistence ii) Weston cell iii) Resolution iv) dynode

Q2.) a) PMMC meter has (10mA) half scale current deflection and (150Ω) internal
resistance. Use this meter to design a dc indirect multimeter to measure the following
ranges of current and voltage: 60mA, 250mA, 5A, 10V, 25V, and 200V. Draw the
circuit diagram of this multimeter with a control switch that can used to measure either
current or voltage.
b) Draw the block diagram of average responding ac voltmeter.

Q3.) a) A (3kHz) balanced bridge has the following constants: Arm AB has a resistance of
(2kΩ) in series with capacitance of (0.1μF), arm BC has a resistance of (1kΩ). Arm CD
has unknown inductive admittance, while arm DA has a pure resistance of (500Ω).
Determine the value of unknowns in arm CD and its quality factor.

b) What is the different between thermistor and thermocouple?

Q4.) a) A CRT has vertical deflection plates of (40mm) longs and (0.7cm) apart. The
screen is placed (23cm) a way from the end of deflection plates. If an input signal is
applied, it will produce angular deflection (4.12o) of electrons beam with a time of
(12ns) measured from beginning of deflection plates to the screen. Determine:
1. The acceleration voltage.
2. The coordinate of electrons beam position at first quarter of deflection plates.

Note: m= 9.1x10-31Kg e= 1.6x10-19 C

Q6.) a) In an experiment, the following reading were recorded:

Xi 1 3 7.5 15
Yi 91.67 57.47 38.93 28.99
1- Derive the normalized equations for this reading if y  bx  a by LSA method.
2- Determine the best fitting of reading (theoretical values of y).
Note: In solution of this question approximate to four decimal digits only after the
point.

b) Draw the waveforms of ramp type DVM.
