EE 365-Industrial Instrumentation and Measurements

This document contains 5 questions for Homework 4 in the course EE 365-Industrial Instrumentation and Measurements. Question 1 involves using thermocouple laws to determine an unknown temperature given thermoelectric voltages. Question 2 analyzes circuits used for signal conditioning of RTD sensors and calculates their sensitivity and non-linearity. Question 3 involves looking up the output voltage of a chromel-alumel thermocouple placed in a furnace. Question 4 uses capacitance measurements to determine the level of fluid in a tank. Due by: June 21, 2020 HOMEWORK 4 Max. Score: 50
Q1: [10] It is known for a K-type thermocouple that thermoelectric voltage at 50 °C and
500 °C are 2.023 mV and 20.644 mV, respectively when the reference junction is kept at 0
°C. Thermoelectric voltage versus temperature relation is approximated as,
Et,0 = a × t + b × t2. For a certain temperature (t1) of the hot junction, the thermocouple
shows 10 mV, with the reference junction at 20 °C. Find the unknown temperature t1 of
the hot junction using the laws of thermocouples (state the law when applying).

Q2: [15] An RTD is simply modelled by resistance R(1+x), where x varies as the
temperature varies.
1. Analyze the circuit in Figure I (a), and find out the sensitivity of normalized output
(i.e. eo/eex) with respect to x. Assume x to be small (i.e. x << 1)
2. If it is required to keep the maximum non-linearity within 2% of span of
normalized output (i.e. eo/eex) over the input range (i.e. x) from 0 to 0.5 then what
should be minimum value of α. [You can derive the result analytically or use
MATLAB simulations to deduce the answer, attach necessary simulation results
to support your argument]
3. If the circuit in Figure I(b) is used for RTD signal conditioning, then find out
(a) the sensitivity of normalized output (i.e. eo/eex) of circuit with respect to x
(b) maximum non-linearity of the output voltage eo.

Q3: [5] A chromel–alumel thermocouple is placed in a 1773 °F furnace. Its reference is
67°F. What is the output voltage from the thermocouple? [Find out chromel-alumel
characteristic table, attach the table with your solution]

Q4: [10] In a capacitance level measurement system (Figure III)

if the separation distance between the two rectangular
electrodes is 1 cm. The capacitance when the tank is empty is 20
x 105 pF. Certain quantity of liquid is poured in the tank and the
capacitance is dropped to 10 x 105 pF. If the fluid dielectric
constant is 0.1 and the air dielectric constant is 1. Find the level
of the fluid in the tank ‘d’ if the height of electrode is 150 m and
the width of the electrodes is unknown- say w.

Q5: [10] Figure IV shows typical water piping system. If we assume no frictional losses
at any point, then from the given data in figure:

1) What will be flow of water at point 2

2) What will be pressure in the line at point 2 (i.e. P2).
