Final Exam: MA 2140 Statistics

This document contains a final exam for a statistics course with 4 questions. Question 1 asks students to calculate the probability of more than 50 items from a random sample of 72 being less than 3, based on a given probability density function. Question 2 asks students to find the maximum likelihood estimate of θ given data from an exponential distribution. Question 3 contains two parts: (a) asks if a claim about average waiting time is supported by a given confidence interval, and (b) asks students to create a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of US adults living with chronic conditions based on given data. Question 4 asks students to conduct a hypothesis test at the 5% level to determine if a group's average blood pressure is significantly different than the

Final Exam : MA 2140 Statistics

Total time: 30 minutes Total marks: 20

Q 1. Consider a random sample of size 72 from the distribution having p.d.f.

 1 , if 1 ≤ x < ∞,
2
f (x) = x
0, o/w.

Compute, approximately, the possibility that more than 50 of the items of the
random sample are less than 3. [5 marks]

Q 2. The lifetimes of a brand of a component are assumed to be exponentially distributed

with mean (in hours) θ, where θ ∈ Θ = (0, ∞) is unknown. Ten of these compo-
nents were independently put in test. The only data recorded were the number of
components that had failed in less than 100 hours versus the number that had not
failed. It was found that three had failed before 100 hours. What is the M.L.E. of
θ? [5 marks]

Q 3.

(a) A hospital administrator hoping to improve wait times decides to estimate the av-
erage emergency room waiting time at her hospital. She collects a simple random
sample of 64 patients and determines the time (in minutes) between when they
checked in to the ER until they were first seen by a doctor. A 95% confidence
interval based on this sample is (128 minutes, 147 minutes), which is based on the
normal model for the mean.

Based on this interval, a local newspaper claims that the average waiting time at
this ER exceeds 3 hours. Is this claim supported by the confidence interval? Explain
your reasoning. [2 marks]

(b) A research foundation reported that “45% of U.S. adults report that they live with
one or more chronic conditions”. However, this value was based on a sample, so
it may not be a perfect estimate for the population parameter of interest on its
own. The study reported a standard error of about 1.2%, and a normal model
may reasonably be used in this setting. Create a 95% confidence interval for the
proportion of U.S. adults who live with one or more chronic conditions. [3 marks]

Q 4. It is claimed that the average blood pressure of people living in Pune is 120 mm
Hg. A study is conducted on a sample of 61 individuals from Pune and it was found
that average blood pressure is 130.1 mm Hg with a standard deviation of 21.21 mm
Hg. Use rejection region approach (at 5% level of significance) to test whether the
group is significantly different from the regular population? [5 marks]
