Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Scenario:
Subway is a privately held American fast food restaurant franchise that primarily sells submarine
sandwiches (subs) and salads. Subway is one of the fastest-growing franchises in the world and, as of
June 2017, has approximately 45,000 stores located in more than 100 countries. More than half of the
stores are located in the United States. It is the largest single-brand restaurant chain and the largest
restaurant operator in the world.
Subway's international headquarters are in Milford, Connecticut, with five regional centres supporting
the company's international operations. The regional offices for European franchises are located in
Amsterdam (Netherlands); the Australian and New Zealand locations are supported from Brisbane
(Australia); the Asian locations are supported from offices in Beirut (Lebanon) and Singapore, and the
Latin American support centre is in Miami.
Subway stores are best known for their commitment to providing freshly baked bread and ingredients
to their customers. In recent years, the number of its unit has been growing at a significantly fast
speed. However, as estimated by economists, in 2014, the Subway restaurant chain encountered a
3.3% decrease in estimated annual sales compared with last year. This report is targeted at the market
in the UK. Hence, Subway requires improving team performance and also may look forward to launch
the e-business strategy (Zhou, 2016).
Do further research on Subway and also consider the existing business performance to prepare a
report based on the following conditions.
Tasks:
Task 1
The context above has described the structural information of Subway. Conduct research and prepare
a report to highlight how culture, politics and power of subway have influenced its employees as
individuals, team behaviour, and performance.
In comparison to your closely observed organisation, other than the Subway, critically discuss the
differences between that organisation and Subway, considering factors like culture, politics, and power
in regards to influencing an individual and team behaviour. Also, critically discuss how the
performance of your closely observed organisation and Subway are differentiated.
Task 2
Based on your experience and research, evaluate various motivational theories by providing relevant
examples and sufficient explanations. On the light of content theories and process theories of
motivation and motivational techniques, make a critical evaluation on how these factors enable
Subway to achieve goals. Suggest examples and make comparisons to other organisations of the same
industry.
Focusing on the relationship between culture, politics, power and motivation based on the research
you have conducted, critically evaluate how those factors have enabled team in Subway to achieve

goals. Bring sufficient evidence to the arguments and provide justified recommendations.
Task 3
Based on your personal experience and research discuss effective team and ineffective team by
providing some contextual support. Explain how Subway has responded on forming an effective team.
Also, consider relevant theories and provide some suggestions on how they can create a better team.
By considering the context of Subway as given above, analyse relevant team and group development
theories to support the development of co-operation within effective teams. While analysing, bring
practical scenarios either from your own work experience or from the research on Subway.
Task 4
Based on your own work experience or from your research on Subway, apply the concepts and
philosophies of organisational behaviour within Subway or the different organisation that you are
familiar with; while analysing, you are required to consider the business situation of the organisation.
Considering the current complex business situation for Subway, evaluate how concepts and
philosophies of organisational behaviour inform and influence behaviour within a given business
situation.
Critically analyse and evaluate the relevance of team development theories, concepts and philosophies
that influence behaviour to improve business performance and productivity in the context of given
Subway’s business situation.
