Probability: Ahmed Ali Mohammed Class-A

The document describes a probability problem involving two boxes: Box A contains cards 1-9 and Box B contains cards 1-5. A box is randomly selected and a card is drawn. If the card is even, the question asks for the probability the card came from Box A. The solution sets up the sample space and uses Bayes' theorem to calculate the probability as 10/19.

Probability
HW3/ Box A contains 9 cards numbered 1 through 9.
And box B contains five cards numbered 1 through 5. A
box is chosen randomly and a card is drawn, if the
number is even. Find the probability that the card came
from box A.

Solution:

Let A1 : The box chosen is A{1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9}

Ler A2 : The box chosen is B{1,2,3,4,5}

From box A The even numbers are {2,4,6,8}

From box B The even numbers are {2,4}

A1, A2 are mutually exclusive and exhaustive events and hence,

they represent a portion of the sample space.

P(A1) and P(A2) represent the probability to choose one of the

boxes.
1 1
Hence, P(A1)= and P(A2)=
2 2

Let B be the number of the even card.

𝟒
P(𝐵\𝐴1) = Probability that the number is even from box A1= 𝟗
𝟐
P(𝐵\𝐴2) = Probability that the number is even from box A2= 𝟓
By using Baye’s theorem:
𝑃 (𝐴1).𝑃 (𝐵\𝐴1)
P(𝐴1\𝐵 ) =
𝑃(𝐴1).𝑃(𝐵\𝐴1)+𝑃(𝐴2).𝑃(𝐵\𝐴2)
𝟏 𝟒
𝒙
𝟐 𝟗 𝟏𝟎
P(𝐴1\𝐵) = 𝟏 𝟒 𝟏 𝟐 =
𝒙 + 𝒙 𝟏𝟗
𝟐 𝟗 𝟐 𝟓
