Heat Transfer Convection

This document contains 8 problems involving calculating heat transfer rates using properties such as surface temperature, ambient temperature, diameter, convection coefficients, and states of matter. The problems require determining heat transfer rates, heat fluxes, heat inputs, or temperatures using equations of heat transfer via convection and conduction between various materials and conditions.

1. A 22 foot uninsulated steam line crosses a room.

The outer diameter of the

steam line is 18 in. and the outer surface temperature is 280°F. The convective
heat transfer coefficient for the air is

18 Btu/hr-ft²-°F. Calculate the heat transfer rate from the pipe into the room if the
room temperature is 72°F.

2. The convection heat transfer coefficient between a surface at 50°C and ambient
air at 30°C is 20 W/m². K. Calculate the heat flux leaving the surface by
convection.

3.  A 16 cm dia plate is suspended in a large reservoir of water at 70°C. Determine

the rate of heat input required to the plate so as to maintain it at a constant
surface temperature of 130°C.
4. Consider a heating chamber with a 1 ft high vertical wall. The wall surface
temperature is 450°F and the ambient temperature is 100°F. Find the convective
heat transfer coefficient and the rate of heat transfer per unit surface area of the
wall. Neglect radiation heat transfer.

5. Saturated steam at 30 psig and 50°.F is flowing through a  2–in OD pipe.

Calculate the rate of heat transfer when (a) the pipe is surrounded by air at 55°F
(b) the pipe is surrounded by water at 55°F. Assume the emissivity of the pipe
surface as 0.9.

6. The cylindrical housing of an electrical device is 48 in high and 30 in dia. The

base is perfectly insulated. Determine the surface temperature of the housing
when it is losing heat to air at 69°F by free convection, at a rate of 1500 watts.
7. Consider a 0.521 ft dia. pipe having a surface temperature of 950°F. The
ambient air temperature is 86°F. Determine the heat loss by free convection per
unit pipe length.

8. The surface temperature of a long circular duct, 8 in OD, is 115°F and the
ambient air temperature is 65°F. Determine the rate of heat loss from the surface
of the duct if it is placed horizontally.
