Application Note 001/03

VESDA and VESDAnet TCP/IP Connectivity for Remote Access

Introduction Equipment Required

The use of a Serial-to-Ethernet Device (“S2ED”) • Personal Computer or laptop.
allows the configuration, monitoring and • Serial (RS232/422/485) to Ethernet device

• Minimum of one VESDA detector.
VESDA detectors can be divided into two • VESDA HLI, model VHX-0200 (if VESDAnet

LaserCOMPACT Addressable Loop Detectors,
which can be directly interfaced with the
S2ED.

As shown in the figure below, the RS232 serial

communications from a HLI or a VESDA detector
is connected to one end of the S2ED, and a 10/100
Mbps Ethernet connection on the other end
provides connection to a TCP/IP2 network.

Solution 2: Remote access to a single RS232-

capable VESDA detector using a Serial-to-Ethernet
Device.

The monitoring device on the TCP/IP network used

to access, monitor or control the VESDA detector
or VESDAnet devices could be placed virtually at
any location. Such monitoring or control could be
performed by:
• A PC running VConfig PRO, VESDA System
Management (VSM3) or custom third party
computer software, or
• A dedicated system or device programmed to
perform such a purpose.
