EXERCISE THERAPY Assignment-Elastic Band

The document discusses the use of elastic bands in exercise therapy. It provides indications for elastic bands such as building muscle and increasing strength and range of motion. Contraindications include pain, inflammation, and severe cardiopulmonary disease. Advantages are that elastic bands allow for incremental increases in resistance and quantitative improvement tracking. Disadvantages include the need for supervision to prevent compensation and that resistance is constant through the range of motion. 24 basic exercises are described that can be performed with elastic bands.

EXERCISE THERAPY ASSIGNMENT

WRITE THE INDICATIONS, CONTRAINDICATIONS,

ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES AND ALL EXERCISES
PERFORMED USING ELASTIC BAND
BY: AYUSHI GOEL
B. P. T. 2ND YEAR
ROLL NO. 05
20TH BATCH

THERAPEUTIC GYMNASIUM

 Therapeutic Gymnasium is a room or building equipped for

indoor sports or a large room containing equipment such as
bars, weights, and ropes, for physical exercise.
 Gym based Therapeutic Exercise is rehabilitation oriented
fitness program that are designed to improve strength,
stamina, stability, flexibility, functionality, and/or mobility
using exercise equipment that is specifically designed to
meet needs of patients with acute or chronic health
conditions such as, arthritis, congestive heart failure,
diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, physical disabilities or other
problems or through individualized exercise routines that
improve or restore physical function so that activities of
daily living are no longer a challenge, reduce risk factors
and improve overall health and fitness.
 Therapeutic gymnasium should have the following
facilities:
1. Therapeutic treatment private rooms
2. Remodeling of dressing rooms and bathroom facilities,
with a large area for lockers.
3. Large windows that contribute to a bright environment
and an ample and cozy atmosphere.
4. New physiotherapy state-of-the-art equipment.
 The ultimate effect of therapeutic gymnasium is to improve
overall health and physical fitness.
ELASTIC BAND

 These are mechanical resistance equipment of

gymnasium that is made up of latex rubber used for
physical therapy and light strength training exercises.
 It can be used in individually or in pairs, with one in
each hand
 These are available in different colors depending on the
amount of resistance required by the patient/user.

 The force produced by elastic resistance is linear and ascending

that means the resistance offered by the Elastic band is
proportional to the amount it is stretched.
INDICATIONS:

1. It is used to build a muscle by increasing and challenging

metabolic load of muscles
2. They offer a higher range of motion.
3. Used for increasing strength and promotion of muscle
hypertrophy.
4. Used for stretching exercises.
5. Used for endurance training
6. To live a healthy life with high levels of fitness
7. Used for gait and mobility balance.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
1. Pain

 Pain during free active movement

 Pain that cannot be eliminated by reducing the resistance
2. Inflammation

 Acute inflammation in muscle or inflammatory neuro-muscular

pathology
 Inflammation of joint
3. Severe Cardiopulmonary disease.

4. Loss of Joint integrity

ADVANTAGES

1. Establishes a quantitative baseline measurement of muscle

performance against which improvement can be judged.

2. Most appropriate during intermediate and advanced phases of

rehabilitation when muscle strength is 4/5 or greater or when the
strength of the patient exceeds the therapist’s strength.

3. Moderate exercise loads, far beyond that which can be applied

manually by a therapist, can be used to induce a training effect
for already strong muscle groups.

4. Increases in level of resistance can be incrementally and

quantitatively documented.

5. Quantitative improvement is an effective source of motivation

for the patient.

6. Useful for improving dynamic or static muscular strength.

7. Adds variety to a resistance training program.

8. Practical for improving muscular endurance.

DISADVANTAGES

1. Patient requires time to learn correct alignment and moving

patterns

2. Not appropriate when muscles are very weak or soft tissues are in
the very early stages of healing.

3. Chances of compensation are high since any external stabilisation

is possible so generally requires presence of therapist/supervision
for ensuring exercise is done without putting additional muscular
effort on the body.

4. Since it provides constant external resistance, so it maximally

loads the muscle at only one point during entire ROM.
