Edexcel Bangladesh class-6 Chemistry class notes

A) Fill in the blanks:

i) A catalyst is a substance that changes the rate of a chemical

reaction but remains chemically unchanged itself.
ii) The human body produced its own catalyst called enzymes.
iii) If pressure is high then rate is increasing for a gaseous reaction.
iv) In the presence of a catalyst a collision needs energy.
v) Catalyst are made in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Enzymes are proteins that act as catalyst.
vi) Protease break down protein when food is digested.
vii) Yeast is a fungus consisting of millions of living cells.
viii) A bacterium may produce over 100 different enzymes.
ix) Protease, amylase and lipase are added to detergents so that
stains vanish in the wash.

B) True or False:

i) The energy is needed for successful collisions is called the activation

energy. (True)
ii) Catalyst are highly specific. . (True)
iii) The reaction between the magnesium and acid is slower when the
metal is powdered. (False)
iv) Hydrogen peroxide is a clear, colorless liquid with formula H2O2.
(True)
v) The pancreatic juice made by our pancreas contains enzymes that
speed up digestion. (True)

C) Questions Answers:

1. What is a catalyst? Give two examples of reactions and their catalyst.

Ans: Catalyst:
A catalyst is a substance that changes the rate of a chemical
reaction but remains chemically unchanged itself.
Examples:
 Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
Catalyst-manganese (iv) oxide.
 Haber process
Catalyst- iron
2. What is:
a) A successful collision?
b) An unsuccessful collision?
Ans:
a) A successful collision: When old bonds are broken and new bonds
are formed after collision is called a successful collision.
b) An unsuccessful collision: When no bonds are broken or formed.
The particles bounce off each other after collision is called an
unsuccessful collision.
3. Give two reasons why a catalyst can turn an uneconomic process into a
profitable one.
Ans: A catalyst helps to speed up reaction at a given temperature. That
means, we get the product faster, saving time and money. The reaction
may go even at a low temperature. Therefore, lower fuel bill and higher
profits.
