1. Overview

Ultrasonic Flowmeter can be directly installed on the pipe without pipe

resection and can sense or eliminate noise with high-performance
microprocessing technology.
Ultrasonic Flowmeter is mainly used in measuring clean fluids and
applied to oil, chemical, metallurgy, electricity, tap water, industrial water,
river water, recycle water. Moreover, Ultrasonic Flowmeter can measure
the uniform fluids with low impurity content(impurity content < 10g/L &
grain size < 1mm), but can not measure the fluids with bubbles & big
solids.

Overview
2. Measuring Principle
While sonic beam is spreading in the liquid, the fluid flow will make the travel time tiny
changed and the change of travel time is proportional to the liquid velocity. Thus, we
will get the liquid velocity :
Shown as the picture 1: on the pipe face, according to a certain position, install one pair
of ultrasonic sensors and the installation ways are Z-way, V-way & W-way. The
ultrasonic pulse of one sensor caused by electric pulse, passing tube wall, fluid, tube
wall again, and then will be received by the other sensor. According to up & down
direction, the travel time of sending ultrasonic pulse to receiving respectively is:

M × D / cos θ
TUP = Sensor Tube Wall Liner Tube
C 0 + V sin θ
M × D / cos θ
TDOWN =
C 0 − V sin θ
ΔT = TDOWN − TUP
According to the above formulas, we will get the mean
velocity of fluid along diameter position:

M ×D ΔT
V = ×
sin 2θ TUP × TDOWN
2. Measuring Principle

M………Spread times of sound beam in liquid

D………Pipe inner diameter
θ………Incidence angle of ultrasonic beam
C0………Sound velocity of fluid when stops
V………Mean velocity of fluid along axial position
TUP………Travel time of sound beam in up position
TDOWN………Travel time of sound beam in down position
△T………Travel time difference in up & dowm pisitions

5. Installation
5.1 Sensor Installation
There are 4 kinds of sensor installations: V-way, Z-way, N-way & W-way.
Usually, small pipes (DN100 ~300mm) use V-way and with V-way, if
there is no signal or bad signal, Z-way will be used. Z-way is given
priority to the iron pipe or the pipe more than DN300mm. N-way & W-
way are less used, which are applied for small pipes less than DN50mm.
5. Installation
5.1.1 V-way Sensor Installaion

V-way is the common way, generally, which is installed on DN15-

400mm pipe. Sometimes, this way is called reflection method.

5.2 The Do’s and Don’ts
1) The pipe parameters should be correct, otherwise, the flowmeter will not normally
work.
2) During installation, with enough silicone grease, make sensors stick on the pipe.
Check the displayed signal strength & signal quality, meanwhile, slowly move sensor to
get the strongest signal strength & the highest signal quality. The bigger the pipe size is,
the larger the range for sensor movement is. Please confirm:
‹ Whether the installation distance is same as that given by M25.
‹ Whether the sensor is installed on the same line of pipe axis. Pay special attention to
the pipe rolled up by steel plate, because of its irregular. If signal strength is always 0.00,
it means that the flowmeter does not receive ultrasonic signal.
‹ Whether the parameters(including all the parameters related to pipe) you input are
correct.
‹ Whether the way of sensor installation you choosed is correct.
‹ Whether the pipe is too old or the liner is too thick.
‹ Whether the pipe is empty, too close to valve elbow or there are too many bubbles in
the fluid.
If not the above reasons, but still can not receive signal, pls try to another position.
5. Installation
5.2 The Do’s and Don’ts
3) Make sure that whether the flowmeter can normally work: the stronger the signal is, the
longger the flowmeter stably works and the higher the displayed flowrate reliability is. If the
environmental electromagnetic interference is too strong or too weak, the displayed
flowrate reliability will be low and the possibility of long-time stable work is also low.
4) After installation, power on and check the results are right or not.
