TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION OF AN AIRCRAFT ENGINE BRACKET
ABSTRACT
Topology Optimization has emerged as a powerful tool in design of structures, utilizing
the advancements in computational speed and power. Topology optimization can modify
existing designs, incorporate explicit features into a design, and generate completely new
designs. Given a design domain and boundary conditions, topology optimization algorithm can
generate optimum designs satisfying the loads and boundary conditions. However, topology
optimization results obtained are composed of highly irregular surfaces. These highly irregular
surfaces make it difficult to manufacture the results obtained by topology optimization. Due to
this difficulty, possibilities of topology optimization have not been utilized to great extent.
Aircraft components are highly critical components, where weight is a major factor of
consideration in the design. Even a small weight reduction can save large amounts in terms of
fuel. The project aims at reduction in weight of an aircraft engine bracket using the method of
topology optimization.
