STRUCTRAL ANALYSIS LAW OF THE LEVER #2 CHRIS O’BYRNE
Objective
To use the law of the lever and moment equilibrium to calculate the mass of an object.
Apparatus
1. 2no. 44 x 25cm timber beam
2. Rectangular timber blocks, triangular support timber pieces, 44x44 timbers as per fig 1.0
3. 2no. hangers and set of weights
4. Balance
5. Measuring tape
6. strings
Figure 1 Experiment set up
Theory
This experiment examines the concept of moment equilibrium.

STRUCTRAL ANALYSIS LAW OF THE LEVER #2 CHRIS O’BYRNE
1. In order to start set the required pieces of Timber, blocks and the weights on the side;
2. The timber piece is checked to have a straight linear surface and measured in order to
result the right measurement;
3. Two blocks were placed and a pin was placed on top. The linear piece of timber was
placed on top;
4. Two different weights are selected. Both weights are attached to a piece of string and the
total weight for m1 and m2 is noted. Two small pieces of stings were cut and tied on each
of the hanging sides of the timber in order to balance the timber, weights were added and
hanging on the two pieces of strings in a balanced form and reading should be taken;
5. Weights on either side of the beam are applied until the beam is balanced. These lengths
are recorded from their point of reaction;
6. Once placing the weights and its balanced, repeat the process twice with different
lengths.
7. Proceed with the calculation on getting the moment and the reactions.
Results
When observing the outcomes, the restoration and reversal times of the reaction are clear. The
beam came into balance and measurements were recorded when testing the apparatus. The actual
results are not compared to the theoretical ones because the weight distribution of the beam has
an unbalanced shape. The moisture content of the beam over the span could be different and the
wood material would not have a balanced self - weight. When preforming the test, it might have
resulted there was a few human errors when recording the reading. The experimental readings
may not have been reading at a significant number of decimal places. Recording readings could
have been a problem where each time the tape measure is placed incorrectly at the reaction point.
Readings could have been taken if the experiment wasn't exactly balanced, affecting the height
of arms from the point of reaction. The stability of the beams was not really completely balanced
between them.
