I. Definition of Terms

A. Recreation
-it refers to the expenditure of time with an intent to gain refreshment.
It is a break from monotony and a diversion from a daily routine. It is a
positive change from the stereotypical lifestyles and involves an active
participation in some entertaining activities.
Recreation is also anything that is stimulating and rejuvenating for an
individual. Some people enjoy nature hikes; others enjoy skiing (or both).
The idea behind these activities is to expand the mind and the body in a
positive, healthy way.

B. Leisure
-has often been defined as a quality of experience or as free time.
Free time is time spent away from business, work, job hunting, domestic
chores, and education, as well as necessary activities such as eating and
sleeping. The word leisure is normally attributed to an individual’s free
time and what they choose to do during that time. Every individual at some
stage in their life will participate in some form of leisure, whether it be

 Public institutions are those areas set aside and funded by the
government through taxation. National Recreation Areas are looked
after, depending on the circumstances of their creation, by the Dept of
the Interior, the Dept of Agriculture, the National Parks Service. They
are often set around areas of natural beauty, such as forests or
beaches.
 Voluntary groups are funded by fees (for one-off lessons or extended
training courses), membership charges, grants from charities or
foundations, legacies or donations, or corporate sponsorship. Such
groups often center around hostels, physical exercise and improving
communities through individual self-improvement.
 The Private groups are often civic, professional or fraternal non-
profits organizations, hoping to improve the life of citizens along a
preordained agenda.
