This document describes an experiment conducted on bevel gears. The experiment involved measuring the distance, load, velocity ratio, mechanical advantage, and efficiency of correctly and incorrectly set bevel gears under various total loads. The results showed differences in mechanical advantage and efficiency between the two setups. Factors like parallax error and improper loading technique could have contributed to inconsistencies and errors in the results. Common types of bevel gears include straight, zerol, spiral and hypoid, which have applications in locomotives, marine vehicles, automobiles and cooling towers.

a) Based on the data in TEST 1 and TEST 2, calculate the velocity ratio
(V.R), mechanical advantages (M.A) and efficiency (E) by using the
following formula;(15%)
Velocity Ratio (V.R) = [Downward distance of pinion P] / [Upward
distance of wheel W]

Mechanical Advantage (M.A) = [Total load, W] / [Pinion load, P] Efficiency

(E) = [Mechanical Advantage (M.A)] / [Velocity Ratio (V.R)]

b) Is there any different on the value of mechanical advantage and efficiency from TEST 1 and
TEST 2. Explain the factors that affecting the following results.

Yes. There is differences on the value of mechanical advantages and efficiency from Test 1 and
Test 2. As we compare the mechanical advantages between both test, we found that the
mechanical advantages in Test 1 is always higher than that of Test 2 for total load W from 300g
to 600g. For total load W=200g, Test 1 ha a smaller mechanical advantage than Test 2. Also, the
mechanical advantage for both test is not constant where load P increases as weight W is
increases. Theoretically, the mechanical advantage should be constant no matter of what value of
weight W is used. This means some errors have occurred. This may due to parallax error in
measuring the distance of pinion and load as the load on pinion hanger is stopped from adding
when there is some downward displacement in hook P. When there is a parallax error where the
ruler is not pointed straight and parallel along the bottom of the hook P to the wall with initial
reference line of the hook P, additional load or less amount of load on hook P may be added.
Moving to efficiency, It is found that the efficiency for both Test 1 and Test 2 are fluctuated with
different total load, W. The efficiency even exceeded 100% which is impossible in practical.
Other than that, there is no proof showing that the efficiency of Test 1 is higher than that in the
Test 2. In fact, the efficiency in Test 1 will be higher than that in Test 2 due to correct setting of
bevel gears in Test 1. Errors have occurred throughout the experiment. Other than parallax error,
the way of slotting the load into the hanger may also affect both the distance of load, W and
pinion, P. The load should be slotted slowly and steadily into the hanger so that only the weight
itself of the load acton hanger and bring to both distance of load, W and pinion, P.
c) There a lots of bevel gear application in engineering field. Name four (4) types and
