S F Assessment: Course Name: Chemical Process Analysis

This document outlines the final assessment for a Chemical Process Analysis course taken by 4th year Chemical Engineering students. The assessment consists of two parts: a report and problem solving questions. The report requires students to write 1-7 pages summarizing what they studied in the second semester, including the benefits and practical applications. It also requires discussing control system components, block diagrams, controller mechanisms, and testing stability methods. The problem solving section contains 9 quantitative questions regarding control systems, block diagrams, transfer functions, controller settings, and stability. Students have 36 hours to complete the assessment starting on June 29, 2020.

SEMESTER II FINAL Assessment [2019-2020]

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Faculty of Engineering
Chemical Engineering Department
[ 1 ] ATTEMPT
Stage: 4th
Course Name: Chemical Process Analysis
Duration: (36 hrs)
Date and Time: 9:00 am 29 / 6 /2020, to 9:00 pm 30/6/2020

First Part: Report [30 Marks]

Write 1-7 pages about what you are study in second semester. And answer all the following.
1. Why we are study these chapters?
2. What is the benefit from this study.
3. As chemical engineering talk about your practical live and these subjects.
4. Give me an examples for these subjects in industries.
5. List the control system components. Explain why we are going to develop a block diagram of the
control system and give an example about that with details.
6. Talk about the mechanism of Controllers and Final Control Elements
7. Talk in details of stability and the methods for testing stability with giving and examples about that
with Matalb code for each example.

Second Part: Problem Solving and Open Book each questions (5 Marks) [45 Marks]

Q1// The two-tank heating process shown in Figure below consists of two identical, well-stirred tanks in
series. A flow of heat can enter tank 2. At time t = 0, the flow rate of heat to tank 2 suddenly increases
according to a step function to 1,000 Btu/min, and the temperature of the inlet water Ti drops from 60
to 52 oF according to a step function. These changes in heat flow and inlet water temperature occur
simultaneously.

(a) Develop a block diagram that relates the outlet temperature of tank 2 to the inlet temperature to tank 1 and the
flow of heat to tank 2.
(b) Obtain an expression for 𝑇2′ (s ) where 𝑇2′ is the deviation in the temperature of tank 2. This expression should
contain numerical values of the parameters.
(c) Determine T2(2) and T2 (∞).
(d) Sketch the response 𝑇2′ 2 (t ) versus t.

(e) Write matlab code to solve this problem
Initially, Ti = T1= T2 60 oF and q=0. The following data apply:
w = 250 lb/min
Holdup volume of each tank 5 ft3
Density of fluid =50 lb/ft3
Heat capacity of fluid = 1 Btu/(lb · F)

Q 2// [ 15 marks]
The output temperature of a crude oil furnace is to be controlled by adjusting the natural gas. If the feed
flowrate and set point are changed, design the control loop, draw block diagram and then find the response
of controlled variable.
