ITA - RNo 59assignment 5

This document contains responses to 7 questions about project management terms and concepts: 1. Crashing techniques using CPM/PERT can be conducted during the planning/design phase or execution/control phase if the original project schedule requirements are not being met or delays occur. 2. Resource leveling is a technique to resolve conflicts from over-allocating resources by balancing resource requirements across the project based on stages, phases, and tasks. 3. Crashing a project means using techniques like adding resources or reducing scope to shorten the project schedule.

Assignment -5
Q 1- In which phase [Initiation, Planning/Design Phase, Execution/Control
or Closing] of a project crashing of CPM/PERT is conducted?

Ans - Using time crashing in project scheduling is dependent on the original

requirements, and the arising requirements. If the project's requirements
during the projects initiation and planning processes can be conveyed in the
project schedule, therefore there is no need to implement any crashing
techniques, but if the result of the CPM/PERT doesn't comply with the original
requirements, therefore crashing should be applied.
Furthermore, as the project progress through the execution, monitoring, and
control processes, and as part of controlling the project schedule, some
requirements may arise, or delays can take place resulting in deviation from
the original schedule, therefore there arises a need for using a crashing
technique to compensate for the time consumed by delays.
In conclusion, there is a need for such techniques in different times during the
project time, but those techniques should arise from Planning and Controlling
processes, and should be applied to the project plan, and the project execution
activities.

Q. 2 The full form of PERT is _______

a) Program Evaluation and Rate Technology
b) Program Evaluation and Robot Technique
c) Program Evaluation and Robot Technology
d) Program Evaluation and Review Technique

Ans - The full form of PERT is Program Evaluation and Review Technique.

Q 3. The full form of CPM is ______

a) Critical Path Method
b) Control Path Method
c) Critical Plan Management
d) Control Path Management

Ans – The full form of CPM is Critical Path Method.

Q 4. What is project resource leveling?

Ans - Resource leveling is a technique in project management that overlooks

resource allocation and resolves possible conflict arising from over-
allocation. When project managers undertake a project, they need to plan their
resources accordingly.
This will benefit the organization without having to face conflicts and not being
able to deliver on time. Resource leveling is considered one of the key
elements to resource management in the organization.
Many organizations have a structured hierarchy of resource leveling. A work-
based structure is as follows:
 Stage
 Phase
 Task/Deliverable
All of the above-mentioned layers will determine the scope of the project and
find ways to organize tasks across the team. This will make it easier for the
project team to complete the tasks.
In addition, depending on the three parameters above, the level of the
resources required (seniority, experience, skills, etc.) may be different.
Therefore, the resource requirement for a project is always a variable, which
is corresponding to the above structure.

Q 5 -What are the disadvantages of resource leveling?

Ans – Disadvantages of resource levelling are -
 Delay in certain tasks being completed.
 Difficulty in assigning a different resources.
 Unable to change task dependencies.
 It is difficult to remove certain tasks.
 It is also difficult to add more tasks.
 Overall delays and budget overruns of projects

Q 6 What is resource loading and leveling?

Ans – Resource Loading - Resource loading mainly involves your manpower or

employees. In resource loading, each employee is assigned a task or a
percentage of a project (X percent of the whole). Usually, it’s 25 percent of the
whole. Then the employee is assigned other tasks until he or she reaches 100
percent booked. This would then mean that the employee cannot take on any
additional work.
Resource leveling - While resource loading mainly deals with manpower,
resource leveling deals with both time (project starting and ending date) and
resources, including manpower and budget. Resource leveling tries to balance
the conflicting interests of projects with the available resources .Resource
leveling generally breaks things down into two categories: time and available
resources

Q 7 What does crashing a project mean?

Ans - Crashing is a schedule compression technique used to reduce or shorten

the project schedule.
The PM can various measures to accomplish this goal. Some of the common
methods used are -
Adding additional resources to the critical path tasks
This option has various constraints such as the securing of the budget to add
the resources, and the availability of the resources.
Reduce the project requirements or scope
This can be done only if the sponsor and major stakeholders agree to reduce
the scope
After applying the crashing, the critical path might have changed and result in
creating a different critical path. Always revisit the project schedule to ensure
the schedule has been crashed.
