Slope of A Line: Teacher-Made Learner's Home Task School: Grade/Section: Time Allotment: 1 Week

This document provides a homework assignment on linear equations for an 8th grade mathematics class. It includes: 1) The learning objective of writing linear equations in the form ax+by=c as either y=mx+b or vice versa. 2) Background readings on slope, parallel and perpendicular lines, and using the slope formula. 3) A series of exercises involving finding slopes, graphing lines, and determining parallel/perpendicular slopes. The exercises increase in difficulty level to assess student understanding.

A. Readings

Slope of a Line
Introduction to the Slope of a Line.

We learned how to graph a linear equation and to identify its x and y-intercepts. In this section, we learn
about another important feature of a line called the slope of a line. Geometrically, slope measures the
“steepness” of a line. Figure 2-14 shows a set of stairs with a wheelchair ramp to the side. Notice that the
stairs are steeper than the ramp.
When you apply the slope formula, you will see that the slope of a line may be positive, negative, zero, or
undefined.
• Lines that “increase,” or “rise,” from left to right have a positive slope.
• Lines that “decrease,” or “fall,” from left to right have a negative slope.
• Horizontal lines have a zero slope.
• Vertical lines have an undefined slope
